Hi guys!
I'm hoping you guys can help me. I have a 2 1/2 year old rat called Winky. Shes unfortunately got a mammary tumour which we decided not to have it removed given her age and the fact we believe she has a uterine tumor as well. We've been to the vet and shes on palliative care now getting all the snuggles and treats she desires.

In the past week she has developed a lump in on her leg. It is not painful to touch but is growing every day. Her mobility is not the best given her situation but she is still boggling and bruxing away still. The lump is on the same side as her tumour.

I'm hesitant to take her to the vets if there is nothing that can be done as I don't want to cause her any additional stress near the end of her life. I've tried to research to see what it is but I cant find anything online and wondered whether you guys have ever seen this?

Thank you so so much!

That mass is firmly attached to her leg? If so it's probably a fast growing malignancy. I dealt with something similar but my girl was much younger (not quite 2) and I had to have the foreleg removed. Watch for not being able to move around and signs of pain then let her go :(

Thanks so much for your response. It is definitely attached to her leg and looks the same as Sparrow's did! We will keep a close eye on her and as soon as we see signs of pain we will take her to the vets. It's so sad to see :(

I think you are already pretty understanding about the situation. Just by saying you have her under palliative care tells me that much. So i would recommend you just continue on as you were, as unfortunate as it already is, you really can't do much more than that. She is receiving the best possible care already. Im not sure but Prednisone might help, but youll have to confer with the vet. I have had rats in similar situations live for many months after you believe it is time to relieve her of her suffering. It all depends on many factors, like her general overall healtg, the type and locations of her tumors, and, most inimportimp, the speed of their growth. Unfortunately I couldn't really tell if my cases were in a lot of pain or just moderately in pain. But everyone is aware that cancer is usually very painful. So if you are not giving her any pain meds, maybe you should talk to your vet about starting her on Metacam. As you know, rats hide their pain and illnesses and injuries extremely well. If you can discern any signs of pain, it's fair to say she is experiencing a substantial amount and should be on Metacam. Well, this is when I would normally say to give her tons of love and comforting, but I know you already are doing so. My best to you both, so nice to read about your compassion and devotion to your ill girl in the twilight of her life.
