So i recently got a exotic nutrition wheel for my rats and it has a sandy track to wear down their nails. the instructions say not to leave the sandy track on too long because it can hurt the animal if they’re nails are worn down too much. However, my rats don’t run in their wheel really? they more enjoy just walking on it at leisurely pace or rocking back in forth in it. in addition the never use it more than a few minutes at a time. i was wondering if it was okay to leave the sandy track in since i think the direction was aimed more at people who own animals who consistently run on the wheel.

I looked up exotic nutrition wheels. Interesting.
I am aware of wodent wheels but have never seen those before
Personally I would follow the manufactures instructions.
Plus you never know how much the wheel is actually being used when you are not around

We have 2 silent spinners from Exotic Nutrition. Our girls have had their wheel for almost 3 years. I change out the sandy track every 3-6 months (as it gets wore down or gross I change it!) when they were younger I changed it more often, as they have gotten older and don't use the wheel as often a track will last them longer. Our boys are lazy, and tend to use their wheel as a place to eat instead of exercise! They've had the same track for about 13 months....and it's still in good shape. I take a damp cloth and wipe it down gently to get any icky (more food than poop!) stuff off. I buy a extra track to have on hand so that I don't have to wait to change it out when needed, and that way they always have it available to use when they want. I LOVE the wheel...it's expensive as all get out but I love that there's not bar inside it for tails or feet or backs to get hurt on!

so you don’t feel the need to change it out with the regular track every few days? the instructions say that’s what you should do but it doesn’t seem necessary to me?

I've never used the regular track. They don't run on it enough to make it worth the hassle! If it were something like a hamster that runs for long periods of time, then yes, I'd change it out. But our 6 girls don't use it enough (even when they were younger they never spent more than a few minutes at a time on it! We've even had to have their nails trimmed because they weren't running enough on the track for it to to it's job!) I'd keep an eye on your ratties feet...if you notice sores or red spots, stop using the wheel immediately or change out the track. But in all the time that we've had ours, we've never had any problems with their feet!!! Good Luck!
