Hello,

I'm just wondering if anyone knows of anyone who has transported a rat from the US to Canada via New Brunswick. Curious to know if there were any issues driving the rat(s) across the border. Technically they do not require an exotic pet permit as Norway rats are permitted to cross but I'm wondering if this has ever been questioned at the border anyways.

Thanks!

I have not heard of problems, however, there are issues with driving rats from Canada to the USA
(Need a health check with a letter from a vet stating they are not African pouched rats, letter from US customs etc).
I have transported large numbers of rescued rats from NB to a rescue in Maine several times, although it has been several years
I would suggest contacting the Canada border guards and making inquiries

There are many rats in NB, NS, Ontario etc in need of good homes

It would be a good idea to print out the documents and have them when crossing the border, just in case.
Border guards do not deal with this very much.
Canadian border guards are great.

However, in my experience US border guards are very difficult, aggressive, etc. Once when crossing the border with some rescues going to Mainely Rat Rescue, I was detained (along with another rat rescuer and former forum member) for several hours. The US border guards threatened to confiscate the rescue rats and feed them to the snake belonging to one of the guards.
After that incident, the USA customs and border protection office in Washington would contact the Calais Maine border crossing for me the day I was driving rescued rats to the USA in order to ensure things went smoothly.

I have found that the US border guards are easier to deal with if USA citizens bring the rats across the border.
