My rat Patches just had babies. I am new to babies and litters etc (my other rat mom Lightning had her babies last thursday), and my question is if this momma does not do well with babies, will the other mama possibly accept them as hers? How would I introduce them, and should I worry that there’s her 12 plus however many my other mom had being TOO many that some may not survive? TIA all. I am hoping that Patches is a good mama just like my Lightning is, but it is too soon to tell as she is currently still in labor. (Unsure when she started to give birth, but odd that it is 4pm and not in the middle of the night. Worried she got over-stressed by the father whom I have removed from the cage so as not to cause more stress)

Babies need colostrum from their mama for the first few days after being born …. if they do not get it then you will need to buy some rat colostrum as it is essential. After a few days a rat will stop producing colostrum and start producing milk for her babies.

Hopefully she will be a good mama.
The new babies will not be able to compete for a nipple with babies a week older then they are - female rats have 10 to 12 nipples.
When rats have huge litters, they often divide the litter into 2 groups and spend time nursing both groups. So, it is possible but far from ideal, and would be hard on Lightening to nurse that many babies
Why are you concerned that Patches may be unable to nurse her babies?

Please see the links on birth, babies etc in the Reference Thread. https://www.ratshackforum.com/threads/reference-thread-read-only.35894/
The links provide a lot of good, reliable information.

Thank you, and mostly worried because Patches was stressed and picked on from the father (who has since been removed) which I think sent her into early labor and it concerned me. But I have been watching her and so far she is doing good. So I cross my fingers that she continues this.

I will be checking them before bed to count how many and check to see their bellies and make sure they are getting what they need. Will have to keep everyone updated. Thank you for the reference links, I will look over them now as well!
