I've used Kitten Revolution before, but I'm not sure if I was doing it correctly, since it looks like my rats have lice again. So I'm just here to confirm.

Will I only squeeze one drop of medicine between their shoulders and then reapply a week later? How many times should I do this?

Do I have to stop them from grooming? Should I bathe them before?

Also, I may end up EXTRA deep cleaning my cage. Fleece gets washed in cold water with unscented detergent, I wipe all of their hides, platforms, and floors down. Should I clean the bars? Should I scrub their litterboxes too? I change litter frequently.

Any advice is appreciated! I maybe got unlucky and got lice again or I made a mistake and didn't do it long enough.

Clean everything,
new bedding needs to be frozen for 36 to 72 hrs after purchase
anything that can not be washed gets frozen for 36 to 72 hours
Revolution can not be reapplied for a month …. unless a vet examines them and says it can be reapplied after 2 weeks
Please see: http://ratguide.com/meds/anti-infectives/selamectin_revolution.php
for information on dose, etc

I'm not sure my freezer is big enough for a whole 20lb bag of the litter I use, should I be okay for splitting it up and freezing different sections, or does the plastic need to be frozen?

I would split it up and freeze it.
I would assume you would be rebagging it in the sections you freeze, and possibly freezing the final amount in the original bag

Okay, thanks! I'll see if an entire bag fits or not before I start breaking it up.

Are there any other alternatives to Kitten Revolution, or is it only this brand okay for rats? I'll definitely look up ingredients and concentrations of Revolution and other brands. I'm looking for it in person before I buy online. I see a whole bunch of other brands aimed for kittens, but I don't dare get them.
I don't want to get something that's almost exactly like Revolution and have negative effects on my boys.

kitten or cat revolution - the only difference is the amount in the tube
I buy it from my vet
It is the safest and most convenient thing to use - you can use Ivermectin (horsewormer ) but it is easy to overdose and needs to be given repeatedly

other meds for lice/mites etc for cats are not safe to use with rats,
only revolution (Selamectin) is safe to use

You can use kitten/cat/puppy OR dog at half the kitten strength. It's best to draw up a dose based on weight. If you can give me weights I can work out doses.

As for the freezing of the bedding. Freeze in portions for 48 hrs each. This kills off any stowaways.

Because Revo absorbs through the skin into the bloodstream and stats effective almost a full month, it's longer than the life cycle of the buggies. So the massive deep cleaning isn't necessary.

If you're looking for a cheaper, online Revolution clone.... look up "Stronghold". It is EXACTLY the same product as Revolution, only not USDA-approved. It's actually the same company, same doses, same tubes, same ingredients, same exact product, only it's available online from European sources since it is Revolution marketed to European countries and not USDA regulated. Oh, and did I mention that it's cheaper?. As for Ivermectin... "Horse DEwormer", it's not as dangerous as you may be led to believe. From experience.... I have treated dozens of rats, and ALL from the same single tube, which cost me $5!!! Just dose as recommended... An uncooked grain of rice sized amount, which, even if you doubled that, would not harm a healthy rat. And as for the 3 weekly doses? I had been sucesssucc with just a 1 time initial dose and a thorough cage cleaning. I'm not kidding, 1 dose for mites and even 1 dose for lice, including all the nits, eggs, etc. The real trick is to clean thoroughly and keep a close eye on them. Healthy rats will not need a second or third dose, but if it makes you feel better. Now, sick rats are different, I don't treat them but separate them, bathe them, and comb them often as I can. And of course I clean, clean, clean. Unhealthy, aged, young, or otherwise imperfect healthwise rats are too vulnerable to the toxins in EITHER treatment, IMO. If you do your homework, you'll agree. Young rats can wait it out, sick rats may or maybe not, but older, weak rats need to be treated with care and lots of loving time. It's a labour of love, but it's better than risking the side effects of treating with toxic chemicals. Housing them alone or with a buddy to help groom is usually sufficient if you clean and wash accordingly. Good luck. And personally? I recommend the Ivermectin 1.87% horse paste in the giant syringe. It will last you a lifetime for $5.

Yup, as I wrote in my reply, Google Stronghold, it's the EXACT same thing as Revolution, only cheaper and available online. But I personally use Ivermectin, it IS safe if you only treat ascrecoas reco, and I don't treat sick, Young, and old or weak rats. But then, I don't treat them with Revolution if sick either.

Cleaning the bars is a bit drastic. But a bath before treatment is always good, although I think their fur needs to be dry to apply it. And yes, don't allow grooming for awhile, until the treatment is dried up at least. Let the treated one play on your bed until he's all set, then he's ok to groom. Personally, I transfer treated ones to solo housing for the night, then back to his cage with other who can help groom him and get rid of all the dead or dying buggies. In case you don't know....all rats have mites, but the rats keep them in check, with no symptoms, by grooming. It's the unhealthy, old, sick, young, or, most often, unclean rats who get infested. That's why husbandry is so important. As is mutual grooming. So solo rats can't groom themselves as well and can get a flareup. And lazy or sick and weak rats do also. Ok, hope that helps.

I don't have a digital scale period. I have an old, old, OLD gram scale from when my grandma was little, but that only goes up to 100g and most of my rats are over 100g. Plus, the measurements only go in 50's, so I'll never be precise enough.

(No scale yet, kept running out of time to do it and I've had some health issues pop up recently).

Where do you guys get your Revolution from? Chewy.com needs prescription approval. There's Walmart, but... it's Walmart. There's also a lot of other sites, but I don't want to be spending upwards of $60 to get scammed or sent something wrong/bad. Though, I noticed, each time I looked up and found Kitten Revolution, it's Kitten AND Puppy Revolution. Hopefully that doesn't change the dosage? The picture of the box says 0.25mL (15mg) of selamectin. I can only find this kind on Walmart, Chewy, and a few other sites (such as Pet Rescue Rx).

I've thought about calling up a vet, but I'm sure they'll need to see at least one of my rats beforehand and, well, exotic vets around here are expensive, even by their standards. As said in my Peter and Owen post from a couple of months ago, I'm sort of searching for a new, experienced rat vet. All in all, I'm just afraid a vet will refuse a prescription or try to give me something other than Revolution. I'm a shy, anxious person.
I'm also 100% positive my rats have mites or lice. Various little red dots all over their bodies and there's this intense, sudden need of theirs to scratch certain spots. That was the feeling I got when I had lice as a child.

I get revolution from my vet.
Since I have always had a regular vet, various vets I have seen have always just sold me it without seeing my pets.
Maybe it works differently in different places but you could always try contacting your regular vet.

Okay, finally got the weight of my rats. Apologies for late reply.

Their litterbox and other paper bedding are all going in the freezer. Calling around to vets, trying to find one that carries Revolution and/or is willing to give a prescription on it for rats.

I'll add some information on each rat in case that affects dosage.
Grumpy - 475g
Just turned two years old. Rapidly lost weight, suspected PT. Is he safe to give Revolution? He can't reach his back or butt now, so I "groom" it for him and get groomed in return.

Ni-Ni - 427g
About to turn two years old. Has held a steady weight. No known health issues as of now, besides the lice.

Lil Chu - 434g
About to turn two years old, as well. Held a steady weight. Still acts like a very young rat. No known health issues, aside from the lice.

Owen - 595g (I know, I call him big hefty boy)
A year and a half old. Held a steady weight and has no known health issues, besides the lice.

Genji - 450g
Brand new. Previous owner told me he was a year old, but I think a tad bit younger. No known health issues, besides the lice.

Hanzo - 381g
Also brand new. Previous owner told me is Genji's littermate, so same age as Genji. No known health issues, besides the lice as well.

Arthur - 345g
Seven months old. Small for his age. No known health issues, aside from wanting to challenge the other adults for rights to be highest ranking rat and lice.

Luci - 440g
Seven months old. Large for his age, imo. Same as Arthur, challenging adults and the lice.

Wasn't surprised to see that Arthur was my lightest rat. Arthur is my smallest, but not by too much. I thought Lil Chu would definitely be lighter than Ni, but seeing the weight values doesn't surprise me so Lil Chu has held onto his muscle a lot better than Ni. I knew Owen would be my heaviest, but holy crap! Nearly a pound and a half, good lord! He is BIG boy after all. I'm happy to see Luci turning into one of my bigger boys. He's still growing and when I took him home, he was smaller than a full grown mouse, but he's about to pass Genji's weight and then come for Owen! Grumpy used to be a very big boy back in the day, but he's lost a ton of weight. I suspect he was 550g when he was young and healthy.

OK you are making me work here LOL

Kitten/Puppy/Cat are all the same concentration - 60 mg/ml
Dog is stronger at 120 mg/ml

Grumpy - 475 (safe to use) 0.06 ml
NiNi - 427 - 0.06 ml
Lil Chu - 434 - 0.06 ml
Owen - 595 - 0.08 ml
Genji - 450 - 0.06 ml
Hanzo - 381 - 0.05 ml
Arthur - 345 - 0.05 ml
Luci - 440 - 0.06 ml
