My baby rat is sneezing and kind of coughing. I remember from the day I got him, he’s sneezed a lot. Last night I heard him making a deep squeak kind of sound that sounds like coughing. He is still doing it this morning. I have a video of it but I’m not sure how to upload it here. Is it something serious? Is it possible he might just have allergies?

How old is he ? Is he eating, drinking, peeing, and pooping normal ? Is he acting lethargic ? You can post the Video to YouTube and link it here.

here is the video. it turned out really blurry when i uploaded it but you get the gist. He is about 2 months old and he isn’t acting any differently, he is still running around and eating and drinking and pooping normally.

Oh he's a precious little thing ! Do you have any vets around that you can go to.? He sounds like he's got a URI to me. Also is he alone ?

I think there is a vet nearby who can treat small animals, I just need to call and make sure. He isn’t alone, I have another boy who’s almost 3 months old. Is this something super emergent? How soon should I make an appointment?

I'd take him in as soon as possible. It's a good sign that he's acting normal and not lethargic but he sounded congested and that's not a good thing to happen for any creature.! Rats are experts on hiding illness so he could be fine one minute and in very bad shape the next.

Thank you for the responses. I’ll try and get him some help. I’m very nervous about this

Understandable. But if he gets the proper treatment then he should be just fine. Like I said it's a good thing he isn't lethargic so I wouldn't lose hope just yet.!
