Alright so my one rat had an oops litter. From the beginning. Last weekend she had 2 babies whom died. But she still looked extremely pregnant. I took her in, fearing she was having complications. They did not see anything baby-wise but did notice something. They gave her oxy injection to push anything out. Well, She has still been huge, so i thought maybe tumor as Ive been able to easily feel her ribs and spine. This morning 4/20 I wake up and there are now 12 babies in with her. She is now thinner than a rail and looks sickly. I am worried about her and the babies. I checked them, I cannot see any milk band as of yet. Is it still fairly early to tell? Should I contact a vet? I gave her eggs and some fruit. Should I separate her and the babies from my other 3 females? Her sister seems to be trying to help care for the babies as she is constantly with them along with momma. I would hate to disturb anything but I dont wanna lose more babies. They are noisy and seem to be doing better than the first 2 that had been born. Any help and advice is appreciated.

I would separate her and the babies from the other rats, give her strips of paper towel for nest building, and nothing in the new cage containing threads or anything babies could fall off of such as hammocks or levels.

Hopefully they will soon have milk bands.
If she looks sick contact a good vet with the knowledge and experience to treat rats as there may be something seriously wrong such as more babies inside of her

Please post pics and a video (post video to youtube and put the link on here) You should also post to the facebook group Real Rat Lovers Want To Know

I took her to the vet this morning, he said all seemed pretty well aside from the abnormality of her having 2 babies last weekend, getting that injection and nothing happening then today having 13 babies. He gave me some powder to mix with water to feed the babies if mama is not feeding them. I have not checked on them since 1130 am EST today, I am about to check them shortly and hoping to see something good. I will also post a short video of them in a later post once I take the video.

babies will need colostrum which they get from a mama that has just give birth …… or you buy it from a vet.

It is almost impossible for babies that young to survive unless they have a mama that can nurse them …. you need to find a foster mama or 2 with a litters and add them carefully to their litters - so you will need to buy two girls and their babies asap

There is info re orphaned babies and hand feeding here (use a new tiny clean paintbrush and formula - KMR, or organic soy infant formula) https://www.ratshackforum.com/threads/reference-thread-read-only.35894/
also read the file on the facebook group Mice and Rat are Awesome and get into their babies group

the babies will die unless they get colostrum and you find a couple of nursing mamas with litters - but in the meantime hand feed them (and stimulate to pee) - see links above - to keep them alive until you can find mamas or until their mama is able to nurse them - you can feed their mama formula in a shallow dish too …. try pet stores, breeders, social media, shelters, rescues, kijiji, etc

Get the mama and any remaining babies to a good vet that has the knowledge and experience to treat rats now!!!
She needs meds and likely surgery
She may have a dead baby stuck inside of her ……. she may be septic and dying
If the vet saw something - it may have been a baby stuck inside of her and if so she needed a C-section

It sounds like your current vet does not know enough about rats,
the mama should have received meds and possibly surgery when he saw her yesterday
…. I assume that he does not have the knowledge and experience to safely operate on rats (only gas is given, nothing by injection until after the surgery) so please find a better vet immediately

**** I am not a vet etc, just a pet owner very angry that your little girl and her babies are going through this
