I'm a little cautious about the size, but so long as he is interacted with and let out frequently, it shouldn't bother him too much.
EDIT: But I can't plug that cage into a rat cage calculator, so I can't say for sure. The wheel is definitely too small any wheel smaller than 16" will damage a rat's spine over time.
I've never brought my rats on vacation because I have so many lol.

I definitely think that's way too small. I'd maybe go with one a tad bit bigger, but I do like the idea of putting in things that are familiar to him. Especially with him having the issues he has lately. Also, being that you're going to be in an area unfamiliar to him, I would be extremely cautious of letting him out for play time. So with that being said, I'd make sure he's in a spacious enough cage, that he won't get too bored, or destructive. Then, later on, when you get his friend, you can use the cage for quarantine, and an extra cage for future rats who haven't been introduced. ;)

Thanks Dena. I did bring his food bowl and the cardboard pieces he likes to put inside his hammock and some of his marked fleece and paper towels. I also brought his favorite tennis ball and his play pen

Awesome! So you thought to bring his play pen! I'm sure he will be comfortable with play time in that. I'd just watch him closer than normal. I wouldn't have thought to so much, until I saw SQs post about the ermine. That freaks me out! I don't think they have those in that area, but I'd worry more about other animals..... But I'm just weird and overprotective maybe... LOL

This is the final set up, I know people don’t recommend placing hammocks in during a drive but I wanted him to be as comfy as possible for the long ride. These pictures are from 6pm and it’s currently 10pm, that’s why I used the small cage anyway.

Oh yeah he’s definitely not going anywhere near outside. And I also won’t let him out of my sight during playtime. He’s too precious to lose to some random predator.

I am too late at replying, but no, it is way too small.
Please make a small bin cage to use as a carrier (please see the Reference Thread for a link)

btw, I put a large hammock hung low in carriers during travel as it is more comfortable, but very low so easy to get in and out of during a trip
