Someone on another site got 2 - 5wk old rats, turns out 1 is a boy, the other a girl. https://www.facebook.com/groups/pet.rats.group/permalink/2256243704414288/

Natalie Mackie (3rd comment) says to use " Galastop for the female to absorb pregnancy" The new mom is asking if she can order it...
I'm concerned for the rattie! Seems like very bad advice, but Is this even safe???

If they are only 5 weeks old, baby should be fine.
It is recommended to separate at 5 weeks but some do not separate until just before they turn 6 weeks old.
Six week old babies are unlikely to be pregnant if both are 6 weeks old and baby girl was not in with an adult or teen male

no idea about that medication ….. and she would also need to make sure it is safe for babies because meds that are safe for adults are not always safe for babies

Apparently it is cabergoline http://ratguide.com/meds/central_nervous_system_drugs/cabergoline.php

Thanks SQ, I know she's safe from pregnancy if only 5 wks (- tho who knows if that's correct eh?).
My concern is about the safety of that medication if mom uses it to avoid pregnancy on that young kid, or the safety of using it on a pregnant girl at any age if people read that and start using it to end pregnancy. The person who recommended said it would 'absorb' a pregnancy, I think more likely to cause an abortion if there is a pregnancy?
I hoped someone would have some idea of the safety of giving it this young kid in this instance - and the safety of a pregnant girl in any instance?
Doesn't seem a good thing to be recommending to people unless it's proven safe to use :(

True …. hopefully Lilspaz68 will respond because if anyone knows the answer to your question ….
Btw if you read the link I provided, ratguide says not to give it to pregnant or nursing rats

Yup, there ya go, it says shown to cause spontaneous ABORTION, not 'absorption' as that person said. Plus if it didn't end a pregnancy the mother would be unable to feed the babies.. just seems like really really BAD - even DANGEROUS - advice..

I have used bromocriptine to prevent pregnancies, and the girls reabsorbed and didn't abort. I honestly wouldn't use it though on a 5 week old baby as its very unlikely she's pregnant or even able to conceive.
