I have a problem living in Europe, so there's not much information about rat food brands available around here.
I also can't find lab blocks anywhere.

What do you think about Vilmie Rat food?

I'm also supplementing it with fresh, safe for rats veggies, and at time to time some fruit.
 
The protein level is ok as the lowest % you can get in rat blocks is 14%
It has animal protein (meat by-products and fish), but 1 of the 2 recommended blocks contains animal protein from animals
Jorats has read extensively for years on rat diet so she should be able to give you good feedback

Are animal proteins bad for rats? I don't eat meat myself, but I'm willing to provide my girls everything they need, including animal products.

I researched some of the rat food available around here, and a lot of them have protein levels about 14%. I should Provide Sneki, the young one with some extra protein, is that correct?
 
Research shows that animal protein is not healthy for rats (China Study)
but one of the top two blocks for rats in North America contains animal protein
I think you use the best block you can ….. as I mentioned the protein % looks ok
and it may be a good block, Jorats can tell you more

Babies do well getting the 14% blocks (plus daily vegetables etc)
If babies are very young they might benefit from supplementing with organic soy infant formula thickened with baby cereal or something similar if they were taken away from their mama before 5 weeks old.
 
I searched for more available rat food. A lot of them have 14% protein, one has 12,4%, but not a single one without animal products. I think in future I'll use the one with 12,4% protein as it seems the most natural and unprocessed of all.
For now I have Vilmie.

Here are ingredients of the one with the least protein. What do you think? I'm not sure if I should pick out the corn. The information about rat food and rat care vary so much. The more I read, the more confused I am.

BTW, I've fed non organic rat foods to my crews for over 15 years and most of my rats lived beyond 2.5 years with many going to 3 and more. My vet has told me that my rats are the healthiest she's ever seen. When I get back into rats, I'll be doing the Supreme Science Selective.

Unless it states otherwise, to my knowledge, pet foods contain genetically modified ingredients and animal products from animals that were fed genetically modified products.

I understand what you are saying because I do not want to feed my pets GMOs or food that has been exposed to a lot of toxins like pesticides either. However, like Jorats, my rats have been eating rat blocks containing GMOs for 14.5 years - because of the lack of options.
 
I really hope that's not the case, at least with European manufacturers. I'm very much against the whole GMO concept, not because it's not organic, but that's another story. I'll try to find out how things stand here.

In Europe you are decades ahead of us in North America so hopefully things are very different there.

I have contacted the companies of the two best rat blocks in North America and they both use GMOs :(
In case anyone reading this is unaware, GMOS and the massive amount pesticides used on them such as glyphosates cause inflation which in turn causes many diseases. Glyphosates also cause nutritional deficiencies so the food does not provide good nutrition.
 
I've read that there are some regulations, although GMO isn't completely ruled out.
If there's more than 0,9% GMO in people and animal food, it has to be labelled.

I wrote e-mails to the companies that produce rat food. I have a feeling that JR Farm is the only one GMO-free as they grow all the crops on their farm, while others don't.

Is here any food that seems acceptable?

I got my answer via e.mail. Vilmie food is free of hormones, antibiotics, GMO, and pollutants, so I can give them my money without feeling bad.
