So I have three male rats, Ren is a little over a year old (maybe by a few months) and Fry and Gary are exactly one year old. I got Ren from a girl rehoming him when he was six months old and he was probably bigger than an adult female rat, and the others from a breeder. So they are all around the same age with only a few months difference, but Fry and Gary are TINY compared to Ren. By like, half the size but they eat like CRAZY. I’m just really not sure if this is normal since my friend has girls who are A LOT younger but so much bigger.. Anyone sure why this is? I’ve never seen any rats close to their size at that age, but they are probably the healthiest rats on the planet, since I spend pretty much all day with them.. Thx.

Slim rats are healthy rats so I wouldn't worry too much about them being small. Can you show us a picture of the three? Could it be that Ren is overweight?

I feed them oxbow and some veggies every day, Ren seems perfectly fine, but Gary has been catching up to him will upload a pic. Thank you!

The first two pics is Ren, the second is Gary and then Fry, the last pic was a few months ago with Gary to the left, my past rat, Peter in the middle and Ren on the right.

Very pretty boys you have there! Just like people, rats have different genetics and may grow faster or bigger than other male rats. I have three male rats, born around essentially the same time, but one is half the size of the other two. I call him my little spitfire. Just like people, some rats may come from "big" lines, and others come from "small" lines. Some rats are large and bulky, some are long and lanky, some are just small.
Ren may be older than previously thought as well.

If they're all eating, drinking, playing, and not presenting any symptoms of an illness, they're okay. Make sure Ren isn't bullying them either. I would say male rats tend to bully much smaller rats, but I've seen my little spitfire flip someone easily twice his size.

What sweet boys
as long as they are healthy and getting a good diet, I would not be concerned
some boys are very large, some are quite small, and in my experience most are somewhere in between
I think it is safe to assume that genetics and early nutrition are the reasons for differences

Thank you! No, Ren is a sweetheart he gives up food for the little ones and has never started a fight for the past year of having them thankfully must just be coincidentally smol

I’m not worried about their diet since I fed them unlimited oxbow and eat safe veggies with occasional fruit. I even base the amounts of each veggie depending on the type since I mix about a cup for all three of them together.. must just be smol boys, thx for the help!
