hi, my name is shay, and i currently have three rats!!

spanky (mink/white hooded agouti)
  • male
  • 11 months old
  • dumbo rat
  • purchased from breeder
  • lives alone (after several attempts at pairing has resulted in injury/death to other rats)
  • high energy, fiesty, loves people on his own terms

pico (mink/white masked)
  • male
  • estimated 1 month old
  • fancy rat
  • rescued feeder
  • lives with churro
  • full of life, shreds everything in sight, adores all people
churro (champagne)
  • female
  • estimated 1 month old
  • fancy rat
  • rescued feeder
  • lives with pico
  • docile, quiet, cuddle-bug

Your ratties are very sweet.
So glad that you were able to save Churro and Pico..... unfortunately they need to be separated soon.
Male and female baby rats need to be separated at 5 weeks old because rats become sexually mature between 5 and 6 weeks old. You do not want your baby girl to become pregnant.

I hope you will consider getting Churro spayed when she is old enough (important for health reasons), and/or getting Pico neutered ( and waiting 3 weeks before intros). Then they will be able to live together.
I also hope you will consider getting Spanky neutered. aggression in male rats is usually hormonal

Hello Spankaroo, and welcome. Your three babies are lovely. :) I like Pico's mask, and their names are great too.

thank you for your kind words and advice!!

i am having churro spayed next week so she and pico can continue to live together. i definitely do not have the means for an entire litter! the two were rescued from the same feeder bin and absolutely adore each other. :)

in terms of spanky, he has an appointment at the vet this monday for what looks like a tumor. based on the results of that, i will then make a decision on whether or not to have him neutered.

You must have an excellent vet
My vet will not spay girls until they are 240 grams because of the size and the gas

I hope both Churro and Spanky do well
