I have been reading a lot about the best rat diet and there seems to be many different ideas.
What do you think is the best diet?
I’m thinking of doing maybe half lab blocks and half things like veggies, grains, etc.
What do you think?
I’m also a little confused about the protein requirements.
The lab blocks I’m planning on using have 20% protein which seems a little high but they have been recommended on other forums. Here in Australia we don’t have things like Harland Teklad and we only have Garden Select Oxbow which is ridiculously expensive.
There is another brand of pellets which has 10% protein but I have never seen it being used before.
What do you suggest I do?
I’m not sure I’m thinking about this correctly but I thought that if I add extra grains and things to the lab blocks I can lower the protein percentages?
Is feeding the higher protein food as my rats are growing then switching to the 10% one a good idea?
By the way here is the higher protein food: http://www.lauckemills.com.au/products/category/LWXJRCMW-pets/5630
I couldn’t find the link for the lower protein food but here is the nutritional info:
INGREDIENTS:
Selected from: Wheat, Oats, Barley, Sorghum, Cracked Lupins, Black Sunflower.
TYPICAL ANALYSIS:
Protein Min. 10.86%
Met. Energy 13.35MJ/kg
Fat Min. 3.64%
Crude Fibre Max. 3.94%
I also noticed that the higher protein food does say that it is for growing and breeding mice

Rats need around 10% protein so that is way too high.
Jorats can give you good feedback re the blocks as she has looked into diet extensively over the years,
but you need to post more info on the lower protein block, such as the ingredient list

Since no one has come up with a homemade diet that meets all of their nutritional needs,
the recommended diet is:
a good quality low protein rat block available at all times, unless you are controlling access because of a weight problem
a variety of daily vegs (fresh and/or frozen/thawed)
and occasional treats such as berries, a piece of ripe fruit, cooked whole grains (such as real whole grain oatmeal, quinoa, etc), organic pumpkin seeds, squash seeds, a few cooked beans (from dry, soaked and cooked), cooked chick peas (from dry, soaked and cooked), your own homemade veg or bean & legume & veg soup, etc

stay away from highly processed foods, and nothing with added salt, added sugar, or added fats

there is a forbidden foods list and a list of diet considerations by Jorats
