So, I just got my four little rats neutered on Thursday. They’re doing well EXCEPT the fact that I can’t get their meds into them! I’ve spent hours trying different things! I’ve tried syringing, unsuccessfully. My hands shake a lot and I can’t handle the squealing. I’ve tried mixing with baby food (carrots, squash). Just a slight whiff of the meds and they take off at supersonic speed! I’ve tried maple syrup, corn syrup, grape jelly (with bread and without). They loved the grape jelly until I mixed in the antibiotics, then it’s untouchable.
I’ll buy some stinky salmon cat food today, strawberry syrup, chocolate syrup. Simon has been the worst, so I’m very concerned that he’s not getting his antibiotics.
Any and all suggestions very welcomed! I’m stressed and my rats are stressed.
Thank you! Sorry for such a long post.

Chocolate syrup always works for me. Giving pain meds is so frustrating because they need them but they don’t understand that. I hope that something works for you! I would also recommend having someone help you with meds. Having someone to hold/syringe while you do the other makes it much easier. Some of my rats just didn’t like having meds forced on them though. I don’t know if you’ve tried mixing the meds with some baby syrup to thicken it and then squeeze a little drop out so they can lick the syringe themselves. You could also put the meds into a cup or onto your finger and see if they’ll take it that way.

I measure out the med for a rat into a very tiny dish, add a coupe of drops of organic real maple syrup, a couple of drops of water, and thicken with a tiny amount of baby cereal. The rat thinks it is a treat and gobbles it down
