Skeever & Snakebait

Hello all! I thought I'd take some time to introduce my two girls!

This here is Skeever, she's my first ever rat, and is about a year old now! though I don't actually know when she was born (got her from a big box pet store), I guessed she was about 5-ish weeks when I got her. This picture was taken the day I brought her home, 11/27/2017, and is her old set-up (which Snakebait is currently in).

This is Snakebait, a jumbo feeder that I just got as of yesterday (10/10/2018)! She is incredibly friendly and surprisingly socialized for a feeder. I have no idea of her age, and I believe she is pregnant as she was the only female in her enclosure at the store and is incredibly pear-shaped.

hard to tell from that photo but she might be pregnant, can you get a belly shot?

I did indeed post in two spots XD, once here and once in the introductions section. I figured I would put a bit more detail about the two here instead of my introduction, lol.

It’s difficult to get a good bellyshot of her since she’s still fairly skittish and likes to stay curled up :/ but I will say she is VERY round and her nipples show more than Skeever’s do. If I had to guess from what I’ve seen and read, I would say she’s due just about any day now.

Please set up a maternity cage that has small bar spacing and will be safe for babies if you have not done so ……. one level, no hammocks as babies could fall, nothing containing threads, and give her paper towel strips for nest building
She can play with her friend but needs to be housed by herself
I hope that she has a very small litter and that mama and babies will be ok

I hope you have a good vet with the knowledge and experience to treat rats in case something goes wrong and she needs a c-section etc

She is in her own cage, 1ft by 2ft, single level with 1/2 inch bar spacing. I didn’t fill the bottom tray all the way up with bedding so the little ones couldn’t reach the bars, lol. I need to grab some paper towels that I can let her have as the only ones I have on hand at the moment are heavily treated with bleach and other chemicals. Since I only got her a couple days ago, she’s still in quarantine and hasn’t had any contact with Skeever, I plan on leaving them separated until the babies are weaned and rehomed. As for vet, the only one that I know of near me is a couple cities away (maybe a 30-ish minute drive), and unfortunately doesn’t have an emergency section :/ They do have some recommended places to go if I do wind up needing to take her though! Here’s hoping everything goes smoothly!
