ok so my girls have a URI but are being treated. They are on their 5 th dose and two and a half day of meds. I met a woman on fb that is wanting me to take two of her rats as she is moving and can’t keep them. How long are my girls contagious? I have a new cage that all will be going in after introductions are seen about. How long should I keep the new rats away from mine?

Your girls likely are having a flare-up of mycoplasma, and all rats carry it so it is not contagious. That being said, new rats should be quarantined for around 3 weeks I believe before introducing them to yours. The circumstances may be different if someone has owned them and has been watching and keeping track of their health, but I’m not sure. Hopefully someone with more intro experience can answer that for you.

SQ I am giving them amoxicillin that my boyfriend got from the dentist a little while back. I had one that was so bad. She stayed hunched up in the corner and would take food from me. If I held her or disturbed her any she would sneeze violently. She had porfrin all around her nose and I believe she even snotted when she sneeze. She is getting her 5th dose in a few minutes and she is like a different rat. She is curious now and will take food offered to her. I held her a little and not one sneeze. I have heard a random sneeze from one of them just now and will continue the meds for about 8 days to make sure they are all better. I was afraid I was going to loose them. Now I have hope they will make it.

So glad that they are doing better :)
Sounds like a secondary infection - they kill very fast
Your girls need to stay on it for at least 4 weeks (or longer if symptoms have not disappeared by 3 weeks)

Lilspaz68 can let you know how long before it would be safe to bring in new rats (btw, new rats are usually quarantined to make sure they are not bringing in an infection, but if they have been living there for some time and not expose to other rats pet stores etc then they would be a lower risk))
