I'm in still in shock, as I've discovered my three boys' (around 8-9 months old) dead in their cage about 3 hours ago so please excuse me if I don't make much sense.
Here is all of their background info:
The first 2 of them were bought as feeders at 6 weeks old. They developed a very bad upper respiratory infection when they were around 8 weeks old from an unknown cause, they were treated but one of them had pneumonia and never really "recovered" (he had flare ups of coughing a couple times a month but no porphyrin). My vet said he would just have chronic respiratory issues.
A few months later, I get a hairless boy from a breeder, but /NOT/ before I asked my vet if it was okay, I bring them in for a checkup and she said everything is fine - even the occasional coughs from the one. So I get the hairless boy, and they integrated so naturally and smoothly.
They lived in one of our spare rooms that my family and I frequented multiple times daily. I know I myself visited them upwards to 10 times a day to give them love and let them run around the room which is setup as their free-range area. The room is kept up very well, is well insulated, ventilated, and was never overly hot or cold.
They were fed tons of treats, had scoops of block food and fresh water available 24/7. I cleaned their cage every 8-9 days, they didn't make much of a mess of their living area but the smell was a little intense (which I've posted here about before in the past).
I fed them the best food (Oxbow) that I could get. They had the best bedding, dust-free and everything. They had plenty of things to play with at all times. Fresh veggies daily.
I gave them a scoop of food and fresh water before I went to bed last night. They were perfectly fine, they ran up and down my arms, gave me kisses, and snacked on some food. I thought nothing of it.
I ended up not getting to them this morning because one of my new medications completely knocked me out and I generally didn't feel good for the rest of today, but I knew they wouldn't have finished their giant bowl of food since last night or drained their gigantic bottle of water (the biggest you can buy). I know for a 100% fact I HEARD the water bottle being drank out of around 1pm today. I am absolutely certain.
But I walk into their room at around 6:30/7pm, barely 24 HOURS since I last interacted with them.....
They don't jump up and greet me immediately as they always do, I figure they're sleeping
I see Alistair (the one that was the most sick) slumped over completely unnaturally. I open the cage. Nobody moves. I touch Alistair, he's rock hard.
All 3 are dead, in a pile, on top of each other.
Please. Please tell me if I did something wrong. Why did this happen so quickly. The only thing I've noticed being wrong in the last few months they've been looking a little thin and the hairless was looking a little crusty. My vet said it was probably the weather and it being so humid/hot but she saw no concern whatsoever.
I'm crushed. I'm devastated.
If I did something wrong, I will take the blame. I just need to understand what happened here
I loved them to death, I gave them everything possible.
Please help me understand.
