So I have two rats and a mouse. The ratties are maybe 6-8 weeks while the mouse is a year and a half. Unfortunately my mouse came down with respiratory issues and I spent my emergency vet fund getting him proper care. None of the medications have worked and his quality of life is really poor so I'm going to get him euthanized in about an hour :(

My question is about one of my rats, whose main symptom is wet sounding sneezes. I have Baytril leftover from my mouse and am severely tempted to weigh my rattie and ask you folks about an appropriate dosage to avoid additional vet fees. I'm finding some conflicting reviews about using baytril on young rats (apparently it's caused problems in dogs) so wanted to ask what you would do in such a case?

Baytril isnt good for baby rats cuz it messes with their bone strength I think? Also its hard on their tummies. Unfortunately I had to give my babies baytril ( plus doxycycline and loxicom ) when they were just 4/ 5 weeks old cuz they had severe respiratory problems. My girls are now about 7/8 months old and are still on baytril cuz everytime I take them of their meds they get worse again, but overall they are strong, healthy and very energetic. So in my case I guess baytril did more good than harm. But other people will be able to give you a way better answer.

According to my vet, that's not the case with rats. A 5 week old rat is actually not a baby but more like a tween. At 6 months old, rats are considered adults. I've always treated young rats with baytril with no ill effect ever.

Thanks jorats, your responses on this forum have led me to deciding to go ahead with Baytril for my little boy.

It is not considered pediatric friendly, but as lilspaz68 said, if that is all you can get then it is better to give it then for him not to be treated.
