Hi Everyone, does anyone have an idea to share of an outside the cage play area where I can interact with them and not have them escape? Also an area where they can have fun and run. I have heard about the bathtub thing, but would prefer something else. Thanks!

I don’t know what your budget is but what I have for my boys is a large ferret playpen with an extension. I purchased mine from Fosters & Smith. It has the little mat to go beneath in case of accidents which is really very nice and it’s cute. I don’t know the exact size but I can tell you that it takes up most of my living room. I can't say for certain but you might be able to find a more reasonably priced dog playpen but these will typically have wider bar spacing. Even the ferret one I have wouldn't work for baby rats. When you’re looking around, just be sure that you pick one with narrow enough bar spacing to ensure escapes don’t happen! And, because rats can jump awfully high, make sure you’re getting something sufficiently tall!

A large, tall playpen can get pricey though – especially considering how much we already typically pay for good cages! I the youtuber Shadow the Rat uses a homemade playpen made out of cardboard boxes taped together. She has a tutorial up titled "How To Make a DIY Cardboard Playpen For Rats (Foldable)." As long as you’re supervising them and you're able to keep track of all of them, I think that this would be perfectly fine. They aren’t going to chew through in an instant and if they’re anything like my boys, they’ll be more interested in playing with their human than trying to escape anyway. Just to be safe, I'd make sure to ensure they're in a safe, closed-off room though.

I actually purchased this pen from Amazon & put a large tablecloth under it. Then put different toys, food, water, litter box & little bedding each day for them. They stay out basically all day. I only put them back in cage to sleep at night or if I'm gone for day. Below is the link to Amazon where I got this. I tried to post a picture, but it won't let me. Don't leave other pets, ex: dogs or cats alone with them because you don't know what can happen.

If you want a play area where you can interact with them then:
1. many people will use their bed or couch with a large fleece blanket to protect it and lots of toys added

2. some people make a small area into a safe space for rats by making sure there is nothing they can get into, no poisons, or anything that they should not chew or eat and no small openings or spaces they can get into (if they can get their head in, then they can get their body in) - examples would be the bathroom or a hallway they can block off.

3. many member use chloroplast panels (at least 2.5 to 3.5 feet high because rats can jump), attached with zip ties or with stick on velcro to create a large safe enclosed play area where you can sit with your ratties
My computer is not working so I am providing a few links to threads of posts

and if you want an amazing playpen for them to play in (but you will not fit, then the best playpen is the large powder coated martins playpen (martinscages.com))

With my boys, I got a bunch of really tall boxes , undid them and then connected them all together in the outside with packing tape. It was huge and they loved it! I filled it with towels and tunnels and smaller boxes with cutout holes. They loved it when I would get inside it with them. Hamish loved to practice his ratty parkour along the sides. Now they have their own bedroom with a cardboard box fort, tunnels and ramps as well. I also will toss in a roll of toilet paper or packing paper(the brown kind) and they go nuts with it.
