i have a pet rat I rescued around 5 months ago, tho I’ve known him for a year. He has always been a lone rat and I have read that it is hard to introduce older male rats to new cage mates so I haven’t done it. He is about a year and a half. He is usually super cuddly and sweet. Happy to see me when I come home. Always running around and stuff. I live in an apartment and he has free range at all times. He doesn’t get into anything. Totally fine there. About 5 days ago I came home from work and he didn’t come out from sleeping. He does this sometimes so I thought nothing of it. Eventually he comes out tho Bc when I get home it’s time to eat. Which he knows. I found him and tried to get him to come out and he was acting bizarre. Very skiddish. Anxious. Scared. He ate and then went right into his cage and into his hammock. In the middle of the night he always comes and sleeps with me but he didn’t that night. The next morning he was still scared but he would lick me and take food from me but wouldn’t come from his cage really and if I took him out he would run really fast and hide. I left for work and came home on my break to check on him. I laid on the floor and he crawled on me and licked me and stuff and seemed a little more calm. When I came home from work tho he was skiddish again. He licked me and stuff but was still hiding. I haven’t changed anything about me or smells and haven’t brought anything new into the apartment. He was okay the next day. I had to go out of town so my sister watched him. He knows her very well. He was mildly skiddish but okay. The next day I came home and he was totally back to normal. Loving on me. Running around playing. Spent the whole day together and then slept in bed with me. This morning he was the same. Super excited and came when I patted the floor. Really attached. Then I get home from work and he is skiddish again. He is eating perfectly and drinking. Okay with bowels and pee. But he is hiding again. I checked his breathing and it seems fine. But is just acting really scared sometimes. I’m gone from 1-10pm for work. I get up at 6;30 am and feed him and play with him. And then when I get home I do the same. I’m just really worried about this sudden scared behavior of me. It’s very on and off. He’s not sneezing or making any noises. He was even bruxing and boggling yesterday and today. His heart does seem to be normal beating but maybe beating harder? I’m not sure. I never really paid attention before. I’m just nervous that something is wrong or is this normal ?
