The are 4 male ratties available for adoption at Toronto Lawrence square petsmart. The solo male rat is a bitter and needs to stay solo. The 3 paired are still biters but not as bad. If anyone can help please do. They are super adorable!!!

edit I adopted the rat on it's own and my friend is taking care of the rat. The other three still need a forever home. Please contact the pet shop and speak with the manager Tyler if you can help give the other three a home. They all go together so you will need to take all three.

So I convinced the manager of the pet store to put up adoption prices of $20 per rat to deter snake owners, but the rats still need a forever home. He will adopt them to me for free if I can find someone who can give the three boys a forever home, so if you have room for three young rats, please let me know? Thanks

I just talked to the manager of the Pet Smart location and they were all adopted to a forever home. The person showed photos of their home, the cage setups and everything to the manager and he was quite happy to adopt them out to the guy. =^.^=~

Glad that they went to a good home.
Hope that they boy you took will be neutered by a good rat vet very experienced in neutering rats - such as Dr Munn ….. so that he will hopefully be able to be introed to other rats and live a happy life with others

He is getting spoiled by my friend's family with lots of attention all the time. They will introduce him out to play with the other males in due time and see how he gets along with them. Their boys are free range rats and keep to their area. He will be getting a new big cage this weekend.

Can someone explain this I'm confused? Here in the US, petsmart is a store. Don't they buy & sell pets? Are we not supposed to boycott them from supporting mills? In CAN is Petsmart a shelter or a rescue or something like that? I don't get it.

Yes, Here in Canada Petsmart is a pet store that buys and sells animals and like all pet stores, it is a place where animals are treated very badly. However, they do a few things to try to improve their image.

PetSmart here does not sell dogs or cats and works with shelters to display cats that people can apply to adopt from a shelter. Petsmart will also rehome/adopt out (free) small pets that people return/drop off or that are "damaged" in some way so they can not be sold ................................ Yes, stores that sell animals are places to avoid and places to not support by buying anything imo, because they will just continue to buy animals from mills and continue the extreme cruelty .............................................. and animals at Petsmart are treated horribly, just as they are at other pet stores (although not quite as bad as the pertsunlimited store that closed where small animals were stomped to death by the store manager, frozen alive, had bones broken by the store manager/staff etc and the NB SPCA refused to lay charges regardless of evidence.) ............................. and buying animals from pet stores is Not adoption!! It is buying animals

What was their motive for refusal, & what was their excuse, if anyone has theories? And who's responsible for (or able to) pressing charges against THEM? They now have to give back all donations ever received, so that they can be re-donated to some group that WILL do so whenever the time comes, otherwise what do they imagine they're there for?

Off topic but: Here the local SPCAs operate shelters, take in animals and adopt out animals.

To my knowledge, the provincial SPCA (in this case the NB SPCA) is responsible for law enforcement regarding animal cruelty, investigations of animal cruelty, laying animal cruelty charges etc - they are under staffed, underfunded and rarely seem to actually enforce the few laws we have. People seem to constantly make documented animal cruelty complaints but the NB SPCA does not usually seem to enforce the law or protect the animals. ...... a couple of years ago a woman who rescued a dog chained outside an abandoned house, by digging down through several feet of snow to reach his dog house was charged by the NB SPCA while the owners who moved out leaving him behind chained to his dog house were not charged - the dog had shelter ( a decrepit dog house), and food and water (as the neighbors were providing this because they felt so bad for the dog). Charges were dropped after a public outcry and the news media got involved.

Oh! I didn't understand your reply till I thought for days. I now see that the SPCA aren't trying to harm animals. Their hands are just tied because the laws are worded stupidly it seems. You're completely on topic though.

This is why you don't do optional surgery on rats because there is always a risk when they are put under anesthetic! :-( This was a necessary surgery and

Poor Ralph didn't make it

:-( "GRATitude Rat Rescue I am very sad to report that Ralph didn’t make it. He did well during surgery and the doctor was able to get all 4 teeth out. However during recovery he stopped breathing and the doctor was unable to revive him. Before we left for the hospital this morning I kissed him and asked him to be strong. I had such a good feeling about this and his future but it wasn’t to be. I want to thank everyone for your support and donations. I so wish I had better news."

Removing all incisors is a very very difficult surgery and should be used only as a last resort. Some vets will remove 2 at a time so the rat isn't under as long. Sleep sweet Ralph. :(

Actually, since even a microscopic piece of root can grow back, and not necessarily along the correct path, removal of front incisors are definitely a last resort - they could grow back and grow up through the brain

Very very sorry about what happened to Ralph :(

but surgeries are low risk if the rat is healthy and if the vet knows what they are doing re surgeries on rats
- which includes not keeping a rat under very long
................ as lilspaz68 wrote, the vet should not have removed that many teeth during one surgery because Ralph was under way too long

we do have very poor animal protection laws,
but the NB SPCA often refuses to enforce the laws we do have, to the point that animal rescues, pet owners, etc have no respect for them
