So, Sweet Peas ten babies are 18 days old now and they are a pretty good size. They look like they are overpowering her when they are drinking milk. She doesn't seem to mind she's a good mom, but she just looks so helpless with all of them on her. If babies don't get completely weaned till they are 5 weeks old they will be half her size.
A couple of the babies were picking at moms food Thursday so yesterday I put them a bowl of food in the cage for them while I feed mom on the coffee table to make sure she got to eat in peace. The majority of the babies took advantage of this and were eating. I even offered them some baby food. I figured the more solid foods they eat the less they will tackle mom for nutrition. At least I hope this is so. Is there anything else that I can do to help mom out some?

hahaha that crazy growth spurt will slow down a little, and the more food you tempt them with, the more Mommy Milk Bar will get a break :) I offer baby cereal, baby food, thawed and warmed frozen peas and corn, any veggies, regular staple food, not too much fruit as they can get diarrhea. A little extra protein sources to help grow strong bones and muscles :) How many babies did your mom have? My first rescue litter had 12, and watching her drag those babies attached to her nipples made me wince. :)

Just give mom some extra protein while nursing. I give mine a hard boiled egg every day. But otherwise once they get to this age I think it's easier for mom. She can just lay back and let them feed. The first weeks mom is really busy because she has to constantly lick the babies privates to get them to go potty. Since they won't pee and poop on their own.

The foods lilspaz68 suggested are good for both mama and the babies as they try different foods and mom gradually weans them by 5 weeks old.
If you feed corn, make sure it is organic as GMO corn has poisons in the kernels designed to kill pests, such as rats - rats have died from eating GMO corn

In addition to previously suggested foods, you may also want to offer a good quality rat block (Oxbow and Harlan Teklad 2014 are recommended), and also rat blocks soaked in cool water to make mush. Organic soy infant formula thickened with baby cereal is also good for mom and babies.
