Hi!

My rats (6 months) have always seem to have had porphyrin around their noses when waking up from sleep or just naps. Is that normal?

They get plenty of exercise, eat lots of fresh foods (along with their oxbow) and last had a vet check up about 3 months ago and seemed well.

Yes it is. If you’re seeing a rat who has just woken up, they haven’t had time to clean the porphyrin off yet. Porphyrin is usually produced in small amounts whether the rat is sick or not, so you might normally be able to see it at times when they haven’t groomed in a while.

Good good, thats a relief! They never have porphyrin around their eyes or any other time of the day, just when they wake up. I’m glad it’s normal, thank you xox
