Trying to litter train my furr kids. One is 6 months old, the other is 3 months old. They are in a critter nation cage lined with fleece. I have 2 corner pans filled with walnut pellet litter. We have been trying for 3 weeks now. It seems hit or miss. The older one, if he is out and about, will go into the litter pan, but if he is snuggled into bed he just goes in his bed...quite a lot of poops in there actually. I can tell they are his because they are much bigger than my younger rattie. My younger rat seems to refuse the litter all together. Will go over to it and poop just next to the pan, but not inside it. I make sure to pick up the droppings and pyt them i to the pan. Anyone have any tips? Maybe they dont like the walnut pellets? Should I change to something different or would change set us back? Also, they seem to like taking their food into the pan and eat it there, or sometimes even stash it there? I dont know why they think the potty is where food goes.

I believe putting a rock on top of the pan will help since rats like to pee on rocks lmao. A lot of people try that. Also scoop your boys poop when you can and put it in the litter pan. If you can do the same with their wee, do so too. If you catch them peeing or pooping outside the pan gently grab them and place them in the pan. Hope this helps!

Yeah, it's hit or miss with each different rat but I find if I'm diligent in clean up any loose poops around the cage all day long, it helps them make the connection.

I feel your pain. lol I found my rat outside...and miraculously, he was potty trained. I just got a little plastic basket and lined it with paper towels and a rock of course. That lasted about a week.. now he goes willy nilly...even on my dang ARM! I don't get it. I got a jumbo wheel for him. He uses that for a terlet! yikes. I have no clue. Good luck.. let us know what works for you.

LOL rats mark their territory so if a rat pees on you then he is marking you as his/hers ....... so take it as a compliment ...... and many rats will use their wheels as a toilet

Males are WAY harder to potty train than females. I had one male and all others were female. He was the only one that wouldn’t fully potty train. You could try newspaper pellets. That worked really well for me.

SQ- you raised my self esteem 1000%. My rattie loves me, he really loves me .. if I go by how many times he pees on me. It's just a little bit- not a full whizz! He seems to like to drag it all over me. LOL So glad I bought a 20$ wheel toilet for him.

One of my girls was almost fully potty trained until I cleaned her cage and we had to start all over. I tried to soak up get pee with a tissue and put it in the litter pan for extra smells

You could try different litter as well. My rats are pretty good but when I changed my messy hamster's litter from balls to grains I saw a difference in his attitude right away.
