I found a rat outside last week that I'm keeping. He's been scratching non-stop, losing hair and is patchy in places. I took him to the vet who treated him with Revolution yesterday. How long does it take to work? He's scratching just as badly. So sad to watch him. Thank you for any advice.

The revolution should work quickly but it takes time for the scratching to stop as if it's lice they scratch and groom off the dead parasites, and the drying itchy scabs. You'll know the Revo worked when it's not a frantic scratching but a more casual and determined grooming instead. If there are any scabs they will dry out as they heal and you can help scratch them off gently (your rat will probably appreciate this). If in 2 weeks the scabs are still fresh and bleeding then you need to treat again but most times Revo takes care of parasites with one easy and safe dose.

Thank you so much for that info. Makes me feel so much better since I'm only just learning about rats. I love this guy and will do anything to help him. He's not scratching as much as before. I gave him a bath last night which seemed to help. He didn't have scabs. Just manic scratching.

Poor baby! Can we see a pic? Do you think someone set free a domestic rat?
Yes. He's definitely a pet. I don't if he was dumped or lost but he's mine, all mine now. He also has bumblefoot. The vet thinks it was caused from being on concrete or trying to escape the concrete prison. He came right to me. Knew how to drink from a water bottle and is potty trained. Glad I read about rocks! lol

Sorry the pics are so huge. He rolls over for belly rubs. Puts him right to sleep. You can see the sores on his foot. Other side is worse.

Aww, bless his heart, and yours too! Does he have a name yet?
Cashew. He's much more affectionate than my cat, Goober. I saved him too from a dog attack. When I have Cashew out, he HAS to sleep next to me, preferably with his head in my hand. I'm so lucky!!! I love him a lot. It's so unfair they don't live long lives.

Domestics escape or are dumped outside "to be free" alll the time. Soo glad you saved this little soul.
What a crap thing to do. This little guy had no idea what to do. He was so confused. They can't live in the wild after being cared for! People suck sometimes. (I only added the word "sometimes" so I don't offend. LOL)

My first 2 rats were found in our parking lot, hours apart.. I'd never seen a live rat apart from at the river when I was fishing, and we know how they're portrayed on tv.. I was enchanted to find how wonderful they are!

I didn't name him, the people he was supposed to go to before their boys beat him up and made him terrified of boy rats did... Sounds like your Cashew is an especially special little angel..

Were the ones you found wild? Thank you for saving them! They really do get a bad rap. I didn't know how incredible they are either until now! A roof rat (Florida) had 22 babies under my mom's kitchen sink.. TWICE!!! that's a story for another day. It wasn't fun.

Your pictures are ok as they are, when you post you have a choice to post full-size or thumbnail, but I've never use the thumbnail so don't really know what it does...

No, like yours these were domestic, both pews (unfortunately a boy & a girl) but that also is a story for another day..
