Hi again fellow rat lovers. Whenever I don't have a vets prescription, Ive always used debbie "the rat ladys"doxycycline to flavoring ratio for dosing my guys.
(0.3 ml/lb, one 100 mg capsule with 12 ml of flavoring)
But the more I research the more Im seeing dosages with less flavoring like this...100mg capsule with 5 ml of flavoring. What is the CORRECT ratio of flavoring to 100mg doxy capsule and dosage??? and can you please share a link? They all weigh around 800 grams, its no wonder they haven't shaken this stupid URI. Ugh.

Do I dare ask what dose you were giving your big boys twice a day?

You made up 8.33 mg/ml doxy solution so their dose should've been at least 0.48 ml twice a day. We on RRLWK actually recommend 10 mg/kg which would double this dose

You can mix 1 100 mg doxy packet or capsule with 1 ml of hot water til dissolved then add 4 ml of syrup, their dose would be 0.32 ml at the more effective 10 mg/kg. Unfortunately if they don't respond to this you'll need to add another antibiotic as doxy as a lone treatment is only effective with the mildest of respiratory infections.

Ok - so to reiterate, Its one capsule per 5 ml of liquid. Yeah. Debbie the rat lady was wayyyyy off there. :/

If I weigh them again after work today, could you please be able to give me an accurate dosage per rattie?

Ok Back to work!

Does my dosing sound right? Have a rattie with sneezing that just wont go away. Think I have also been under dosing. I was told doxy 10mg/kg once daily but I just read a page on another site that says every 12 hours? So, twice a day? Ive only been doing the once daily and the sneezes have not gone away after 2 weeks. And now there is what I think is a cough starting today, when I hold him to my ear its crackly. In addition to doxy im also doing baytril at 15mg/kg once daily, but again this other site says 15mg/kg every 12 hours? So Im thinking I should double up the dose especially since I feel like its not getting better. Thoughts? Should I give it every 12 hours instead of 1x daily? Or would it be ok to double the dose and still do 1x daily?

Just be extra extra cautious with doxy. I've heard about cases of rats being blinded as a side-effect. I know someone who this has happened to personally. It may just be in very rare cases with extra sensitive rats, but keep it in mind, and always air on the side of caution.

Preferable is twice a day, but doubling up to once a day is fine.

What concentration is your baytril and doxy? How much does your rat weigh?

My baytril and doxy come in a chew tablet that he eats willingly on its own. They are doxy 10mg tab and baytril 15mg tab. He weights 1.1pounds which I calculated to 0.50kg. So I've been giving him 1/2 tab of doxy and 1/2 tab of baytril once daily. I believe those are both calculated correctly at 10mg/kg doxy and 15mg/kg baytril. But I was only doing it once daily not twice. Now I will be going to the twice daily.
