My name is Jane, my username is smallvic (obviously) and I have been a member since the beginning. I used to rescue rats. I dropped out of everything for a long time, and yet I still kept pet rats except for a two-year window. I have an old, old boy now (maybe not so old, but 2-1/2). About six months ago, the Rat Race Forum on FB, where a lot of us went, closed down, and I understand the reasons why. And I have since quit Facebook so the only places I get rat pics now are on Instagram and occasionally Twitter (both of which I love).

So I'm just saying Hi and wondering who of the old crowd is still here, and meet some of those who came after!

Hi Jo! Glad to see you!

You know, this is weird to say, but I think that with the issues that Facebook is facing, and the way Reddit is laid out, forums are likely to make a bit of a comeback. They were good community building tools. Facebook seemed better for many things, but it doesn't function in the same way.

Hi Jane, I'm still here too, although I'm really just a lurker now. I haven't had rats for the past 4 years or so, mainly because I don't have space for them where I'm living now. I miss them terribly.

Hi Jane,
I still come on this forum once in a while and it's the only chat I stick to since I have rats. Unfortunately I find myself mostly visiting when my girls are unwell as I'm looking for advice. I try to change it and come more often.

Hi, I'm very curious about this ...

Could you tell me? (If it's not hush-hush ....)
and
that with the issues that Facebook is facing, and the way R
Would you tell me what they are?

jorats :
It's pretty quiet in here
Does anyone have a guess as to where the rat lovers mainly are on the current Internet? (I did notice what Rattit seems popular for is posting funny pix for others to comment on, but maybe the value of advice is more likely to be anecdotal than expert there. It's probably a higher percentage of haven't-yet-gotten-really-serious-about-it types like me there, which makes sense.)

Fidget :
this has always been my favorite site
Can you mention what about it is better than the others? (Actually I'd first joined the Rat Forum but it never let me post my question!)

Bellaratta :
this last year the FB groups have really gone off the deep end, particularly the breeder forums
How so, what happened? I've heard breeders were the ones *better* than pet stores so, what am I missing?

fallblossom :
am back from getting tired of FB groups [...] they are of no help at all
What are they then? Just people saying oh how cute?

Petunia :
finding FB to be tiresome at best
Are they run by spammers or something?

Thanks!

There's a lot of FB pages that are fluffy cutesy pics but give horrible husbandry, behavioral and medical advice
.

Ratforum is actually a terrible forum. The management abandoned the page and there is only one remaining moderator so anyone can post anything and the advice can be suspect.

Breeder doesn't automatically mean better. Anyone can toss two pretty rats together, make babies and sell them. But a responsible breeder us actually working on the betterment of the species, trying to improve type, health, and temperament. There sadly aren't very many of them out there who try to do these things anymore :(

I've always liked that there is not the nastiness, criticism & pomposity I've seen on other sites over the years. And very much have appreciated the knowledgeable help & advice I've gotten, especially from jorats, lilspaz68 & SQ. When it comes to FB sites, I can't find my way around them...

I prefer the setup, its very logical especially when you are helping someone. You can always find the post again on a regular forum, whereas Facebook can be sooo difficult. AND anyone can create a page and say they are an expert in all things rat...the more inexperienced folk get taken in with bad information or even dangerous information. Like that Immersion idea on ratforum.com from RatDaddy. Btw he's been banned and ALL mention of immersion has been taken from the site...FINALLY.

I remember you!

Used to be rather active back in the day, but I too have been lurking. Been super busy with 2 human kidlets, and with no crazy rat issues lately (thank goodness!) and with photobucket being greedy, I haven't had any real reason to post. Regretfully I no longer have the time/energy to volunteer/foster for my local small animal rescue, although I still adopt when I have vacancies. I pop in here every now and then to see if the hammock makers have anything to sell, but it seems super quiet on that front as well.

I'm down to 2 sister ratties, my super senior Rupert having passed away yesterday from grand old age (he was an adult when I adopted him, and he was with me for 2 years and 2 months!).

waving hi!! to rhapsody.
If you need hammocks, I still make them. Haven't had much interest in them so I only make them now if I think there's a good chance I've got a buyer. I'm super small now so don't do custom orders but when I get some stuff done, I'll post or you can email me or something. I am working on a set with an owls print right now.

hit post too soon LOL meant to add that I'm sorry about Rupert. I've got some older brothers now, adopted them when they were already well over 2 yrs old. I lost two of them so far and it's not looking too great for the remaining 3 but I am very glad I adopted them. They'd spent almost their entire lives in one shelter only to be moved to a second shelter. Luckily they were very well cared for at the second shelter.
