Her toe is smashed and deformed

This is my first post here after searching Google and finding comforting info from this site. Sorry, normally I would be more cheerful and post a hello post, but I'm getting right down to business.

My girl was under the sofa and it was time for her to go back, so I moved the sofa back and I heard her crying so I quickly picked up the sofa and moved it back. When she came out from there, I noticed her limping and I finally caught her. It looks like one, POSSIBLY two toes were smashed and although there was not blood dripping actively, I Could see red from the area. I put her back in the cage and let her alone for a few minutes, then I Couldn't stand it so I took her out and examined again. I can't really tell what I'm looking at because she hates being held upside down for inspection - always has. I can see for absolute certain one toe deformed and smashed. There is no active bleeding, and aside from her constant cleaning it, she does not appear in distress. She's in a tissue box in her cage right now chowing down, so that's a positive thing if I know anything about animals.

Is this toe going to fall off? Will she chew it off? What do I need to be looking for in the next couple of days?

I've read numerous stories about rats losing toes in fights and all is well a few days later. I'm hoping this is on that track, but the toe is not gone in her case. I may have some metacam from when my dog's leg was sore a while back but no clue on what dose to give if I have any.

Can someone please give me a play-by-play on this? I feel so bad for her(especially because it's my fault) and I'm trying to keep my emotions out of it but that's hard.

Definitely make a vet appointment for her.

Years ago, our boy Eddard bit off one of his former companion Aemon's fingers in a fight. We separated them permanently after that. Aemon was fine. There was nothing the vet could do but provide Metacam and, if memory serves, an antibiotic to be given in case there were signs of infection. Aemon was fine and lived to a shade over three.

If your girl's toes are broken and not missing, the vet might be able to at least splint the foot so they've got a better shot at healing cleanly. I'm not sure what else they would be able to do.

Thank you for your response! I'm not entirely sure what's going on. She seems OK, I mean, if I didn't know what happened, I would never think anything was wrong with her so at least there's that. There's only one vet around here that deals in animals other than dogs and cats. I'll have to make a Monday appointment. She blows my mind at how well she's coping. At this point, I suppose the main concern should be that it doesn't get infected correct? I mean, it's Saturday night, and the earliest she's getting into the vet is Monday morning, so what should I be looking for?

Honestly... I don't go to vets for toes and fingers. These booboos are so common in rats. Rats bleed like crazy from digits if cut, nails get torn off, feet and hands get sprained and there really is nothing the vet can do other than pain management and we can do that with ibuprofen. But for everything else, the vet is very important. Since your little girl is acting just fine, I'd leave her alone. But keep a watchful eye on it, look for redness, swelling and other discolouring, especially if it starts to go up the limb.

Joanne thank you for the reply. I want to post some pics of her foot for review. She is still seemingly well. She slept most of the day with her male cage mate. She's enthusiastically taking treats (with both front paws) and again, at this point, if I didn't know about the injury, I'd never know it happened from her behavior so I hope that continues.

It looks very gross to me, but I'm also emotionally attached and have never run into this type of situation. While it is mangled up, to me, what it is NOT is red and swollen - the two things you said to watch for. Would you agree?

Unless I'm wrong, that's infected. It looks like her little arm is getting red and a bit swollen, which means the infection is moving upward. You weren't kidding about her finger being mangled!

I'm a bit of a worried ratparent, though, and tend to take the fuzzies to the vet just in case. I'd rather be told that everything is fine than find out I missed something crucial and allowed someone to become badly ill or remain in pain because I didn't act quickly enough.

That said, if is was just a sprain or a torn nail, yeah, that's something to look after at home. What you have there is neither. Please, PLEASE get her to a vet.

What would you do if your finger looked like that?

Oh she’s going. Already has the first emergency appointment they had available. I’ll report back after we return.

My Wife is taking her in just a few minutes. I'm really upset about this, and I can't believe how much of a champ she is. It was a complete and total accident and could just as easily have been caused by someone else, but I'm having trouble looking this little girl in the eyes.

OK, so no missing toes! Wow, I would never have believed that. They did an x-ray of her foot and it was just the one toe which was broken. They gave my wife antibiotics, pain meds and anti-inflammatory meds. The vet told her that it's possible the blood supply to that toe has been compromised and to keep an eye on it because if it turns really dark, it will need to be removed. I'm really hoping everything doesn't go that direction. She's dealt with this so well, showing almost no signs of pain whatsoever.

I'll update this post in a couple of days. Thank you so much to all of you who contributed to this.
