I have an older 2 year old rat that I've raised from birth. Most of her siblings have unfortunately moved on and I know her time is coming. She has a tumor and just recently has been shown signs of hind end degeneration. But tonight as I was going to bed I noticed there was loud noises coming from the cage. I see her really spasming like almost jumping but on her sides. I couldn't believe she was doing thing since it was very hard for her to use her back legs. I started to think it might be seizures of some sort but it's not reall shaking but more just huge convulsions that don't last that long. I picked her up and wrapped her in a towel. She starts twitching/having these convulsions more when I touch her back/legs. She is also breathing pretty hard and her entire from legs and some of her face is drenched in what smells like pee(not sure how that happened as most of their cage is dry). I'm pretty sure she won't make it through the night but I just wanted to know if anybody else has seen or gone through this? I've had 16 rats in the past and none of them have shown this behavior. Other than the HED and the tumor she has been healthy. Maybe a little too healthy has she was slightly overweight lol. Even as she lays in my arms she randomly had these huge twitches that make her whole body jump, her head jerks up and her front legs almost over her face. I'm praying my poor baby won't be suffering and if you have any information let me know! Thanks

UPDATE
I held her in my arms until 1am and unfortunately after lots of heavy noisy beaths she passed. I know she didn't have a UR infection because I was watching for that. I think it was just time for her to go...she had several more seizes/large twitches(almost like electricity running through her) before she finally passed

As you suspected, she was having seizures.

Yesterday afternoon my sweet Pumpkin died in my arms within a few minutes and she also had seizures as she was dying ..... Pumpkin had a pituitary tumor and the meds were no longer helping enough - she had an appointment to be put to sleep yesterday afternoon but died before it was time to go to the vet - I didn't realise how very ill Pumpkin was ...

I have grand mal seizures. They last a very short time and do not hurt. ....... Afterwards I am very confused and tired, and have a bad headache for a day or two ...... but there is no pain from the actual seizure.

I don't know what happened to your girl. Vet care from a good vet might have helped (there are meds to control seizures) or a vet might have given her an easier, peaceful death .... but it sounds like that may not have been possible given the time of day.

I am very sorry for your loss

Yes I couldn't have taken her to the vet if I wanted to. I had come home late from work and noticed something was wrong immediately. She hadn't had any seizures before that night. I held her for about 3 hours and every 15 minutes or so she would have a seizer, some worse than others. Her eyes were also really big and kind of disturbing. She was also super hot when she passed which is something I'm not used to as most of my babies were getting colder before they passed. I'm just glad she is in a better place now with her sisters, brothers, mom and grandma! I just kept praying that she wasn't suffering. It's happy to hear that seizers don't cause pain.
Thank you for reading and helping me through this!
