I've been dealing with my sick senior girl Zelda, and the only thing she'll eat right now is avocado. Rather than let one go to waste since she only eats tiny bites, I gave the sisters an avocado half with pit removed, thinking they'd clean it out. This morning when I went to take out the shell, there isn't one because they ate it!

Now I read that the skins are toxic to rats. What should I be looking for?? How long will it take for them to be symptomatic?? I feel like a complete idiot. In trying to save one rat I may have killed them all. Has anyone else seen what happens when a rat eats avocado skin??

the pit (most concentration), rind and skin are all toxic. Next time you feed avocado, just use the meat of the fruit.

I have never seen the effects but I'll try to find out for you.

You are about to have a very bad time if they ate it all...

"The symptoms include gastrointestinal irritation, vomiting, diarrhea, respiratory distress, congestion, fluid accumulation around the tissues of the heart, and even death. "

I did read several things I found on the 'net that said the leaves and pit were the worst part of an avocado. In any case, I'll NEVER make that mistake again!
