My Dumbo rat Dole is sick. He has been for a few weeks now but I thought he was getting better. He is now the worst I've ever seen him. He is older. About 1 and a half to 2 years old. He is breathing so heavily his head bobs and his sides cave in and out. He is clicking and slightly weazing. He is barely moving, doesn't want to be taken out of his cage, and doesn't seem to want to interact at all. He actually started chewing on the bars of the cage today and just stopped. Basically supporting his head by having his teeth around the bar but not chewing. He sat like that for about 5 minutes before I moved him. I have seen very slight leaning. Not even really enough for me to be sure about Including it. I know this is all over the place but please tell me how I can help (besides a vet. Unfortunatley we do not have an small vets where I'm living), what could be wrong, or how, if its too bad, make his passing any better? I'm really hurt I can't help him.

he needs meds ge sounds like a very sick rat. he probably has pnuemonia and be careful with the heating pad you can over heat him.

If you won't take him to the vet for treatment, then you should probably take him there for euthanasia as it sounds like he will end up suffocating to death from pneumonia...

If you don't have any vets that can treat rats then you should, at the very least - take him in for euthanasia, as Joanne suggested.

I'm really sorry you have to go through this, and making a decision like that probably isn't easy.. but please please please trust me when I say that unless your boy gets on antibiotics now and gets on them hard, he will die, and it won't be a very peaceful passing. To give you some perspective, if the pneumonia doesn't take him first, he may stop being able to breathe through his nose and once that happens, you'll be in for something truly horrific.. and I know that from experience, unfortunately. If you're unable to find a vet who can give you the proper dosages to give to him, then what it all comes down to is providing an easy passing for him, because he's in a lot of pain right now and it would be a kindness to put him out of it.

-hugs- This is really a horrible situation, and I'm sorry you have to go through it.

Most vet do not know how to humanely put a rat to sleep,
so you will need to make sure it is done properly and be present if at all possible

A conscious rat should never be injected in the heart etc
Please see http://www.ratshackforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7652

He needs antibiotics and likely Lasix as well ... but it sounds like it may be too late for that as antibiotics take time to work
I am so very sorry

He did pass. He stopped being able to breathe out of his nose. I will be moving soon so I will have a vet if this happens again. He was the first rat I've ever had die on me. Thank you guys for the answers.
