So, in my town i got turned down by 8 vets, they don't see rats cuz ew rats :/ how ever i found ONE that treated Smeagol fro his noisy breathing and constant sneezing with cloranphenicol eye drops twice a day for 5 days, smeagol got way better, hown ever still sustains noisy breathing so we are seeing the vet again tomorrow.
Also Frodo is sneezing and it's been too long for nw home sneezles.
I'm worried that the cloranphenicol was probably not the best choice i told him about the antibiotics you guys get but he said he had nowhere near the dosage needed for my boys, everything would have been too much and I did see him breaking his head trying to figure it out, he says it's the frist time he treats rats and is welcoming of teaching material (gotta love him for that tho). Hoiw ever I'm worried, what do you guys know about cloranphenicol?

Chloramphenicol Palmitate is a pretty strong drug orally but using eye drops for a respiratory infection won't work.

If he's willing to learn, then there's lots of things he can do. He can dilute 10% injectable baytril to 50 mg/ml or oral doxycycline. Even if he can only give you tablets/capsules of things, as long as we have he concentration (mg) we can help you sort out how to mix them and dose the rats.

Either email or print off these links for him

For this one he can even write you a prescription for children's at the drug store.

Here's the link for mycoplasmosis

and just the main site if he's looking for something

Baytril and doxy are both super commonly used on other animals. I'm sure he has some that can be diluted and given orally. If not, pharmacies like CVS/walgreens carry both and you can purchase them with a perscription or phone call from the vet.

I'll talk to him on my next appt, cuz he did have some, also to be safe i have to investigate pharmacies around here since we don't have cvs or walgreens here ( tho i work for them xD)

He does but he said he didnt know how to administer it

It is given orally (never by injection), twice a day and the links previously given provide dosages as there is a range.

Baytril + azithromycin (10 mg/Ib), orally, twice a day for at least 6 weeks is an effective combo for rats. I purchase the azithromycin from a pharmacy using a prescription from my vet

My vet is willing to consult with other vets so if your vet is willing to treat rats, he could contact my vet. Also there is an online site where vets post questions and share info with other vets.

You will want to purchase a digital scale to weight your rats with ... I have a digital postal scale that weights accurately to 1 gram. This is important because medication dosages are based on the weight of the rat.

I use injectable baytril and give it orally. I measure out the correct amount based on my rats weight, add strawberry quik, a few drops of water and thicken it with a bit of baby cereal because injectable baytril tastes horrible. Some vets will sell you oral baytril that already tastes ok. Regardless, the amount of meds given is based on the strength or consecration of the meds, the weight of the rat, and the dose for that particular drug.
