Wow, I miss a few days and so much has happened! I just want to agree with everyone re: get rid of the cone, staples, and half her tail.
Good luck. You are holding up very well, but I can't help feeling like you need a hug, so sending out a virtual one to you and give your girl some smooches!
:hugs:

Thank you for everything, guys!
This thread is 27 pages long, and you have been here from the start. All of your posts have been so helpful, I don't think Oreo would still be all right with out you all and the rat shack.

I just got home from school, and we are going to the vet in a few minutes. It is surgery day at the vet's, so we are just dropping her off and when the vet has a period of free time, she will take a look and let us know what needs to be done. The wound looks every better than this morning, I'm so proud of my little girl!!!
It's great to have happy, bouncy Oreo back, tail or no tail. ;)

Too bad you didn't take the cone off sooner - I bet that wound be looking fantastic by now. Not your fault just following your vet's advice. Hope the appointment goes well.

OREO IS OKAY!!! :balloons3: :praying:

We just got back from the vet. She agreed the wound is looking good, and so she removed the rest of the staples, the cone is gone, and there is no need for meds anymore. She's currently back with her cagemates, with the whole DCN to roam.

As for the tail, she took a look at it, and she said that what it is, as scary as it looks, is rather common and not something to worry about. She said it is most likely a blood clot that has traveled to the end of her tail and yes, it IS causing it to die. She pointed out a "line of demarkation"(most likely getting that term wrong, sorry!) and she said that that is where the healthy tissue meets the dead/dying tissue, and that is where the tail will continue to die. True enough, there is a line going around where the tail suddenly gets thinner and the sickly part starts. She said it shouldn't travel past that, and I'm going to make a line around it with a permanent marker to make sure it doesn't. The tail is going to die completely, get flat like it is at the end, and then either Oreo will chew it off or we'll cut it off or it'll break off. She said she sees this very often with nearly every animal that has a tail, and that it is not an infection, and it will not travel up through her bloodstream and harm her. We're just to keep an eye on it so that we cut it off or break it off when it is time.

Here are some pictures of Oreo looking extra cute during the car ride! We stopped by the grocery store(Publix).

I bet she is happy not having that cone on. She will have that wound cleaned up in no time. Hopefully her tail does what it needs to wtihout any surgery needed.

That tail things sounds terrible - to chew your own tail off, but I suppose the vet is right and that is probably what they would do in the wild. So all is good and Oreo is back to being a happy rattie!!! :woohoonaner:

Glad to hear things are looking better. Keep an eye on that tail! My nakie ended up chewing his off where the black parts were... Quite gross really. o_O

LOL it does!
But she has no feeling in it, we went around and pinched at it from the base working to where it "cuts off", and she didn't react until we got to the very end part of the dying tissue.

It sucks that this happens so often. The vet said that it's possible the clot formed during surgery or even because of the medicine or something.

Wooow she looks so good and happy in that little tub!

For the record you are spot-on with "line of demarcation," just fudged the spelling by one letter. I'm impressed really because it's not exactly an easy term.

Me too!
FINALLY, I see an end to all of this! Her tail is looking like the vet said it would, it has becoming hard and I think she actually broke off a tiny bit. The wound is completely 100% healed. There is a small, red patch of skin, completely closed, where it was before open. :)

Rats are far better at maintaining wounds than we give them credit for :) I am sure she is keeping that spot nice and clean. I hope i never have that tail thing happen here. I dont think I could handle looking at it.... Very freaky looking.

Could you imagine finding part of a tail just laying around... As Peggy walks around the rat room "Hey, which one of you lost your tail" Sorry Oreo - there I go picking on you again, and your such a brave little girl for all you've been through. ♥♥

Speaking of the tail!
It fell off/broke off/got chewed off today. I left with a tailed rat, and came back to a tailless one-- ha ha!

Honestly, this isn't so bad. :)
It looks like it's already pretty much done, only the part that was dead fell off, and she only lost maybe a forth? Doesn't even seem to notice, just looks a little silly now!

GUYS FINALLY THE OREO BATTLE IS WON AND OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:hello: :love11: :toothy1: :cheering: :cheesy: :bananas: :awe:

Thank you so, so, so, so, so much for everything. I love the shack, she wouldn't be here without the shack, I truly believe that. You are all so helpful and such amazing people-- helping me deal with all of this and praying for my little Oreo. I am so proud of my little rattie, and so grateful for everything.

I know a lot of the stuff my vet decided post-care wasn't what you'd all recommend, but I believe that she is a great vet and a very caring and generous one. Also, she removed a ruptured inguinal tumor, and helped my little girl survive and live a longer life-- I don't think just any vet could do that!

I tried to find the tail but I can't, maybe someone ate it... :sick2:
I'll look later during cleaning, but it blends in so much with the dried raisins that it may be lost forever, I'm afraid! ((SORRY OREO))

Rofl I have no doubt someone ate it. Probably Oreo herself. I'm glad she is on the downhill now.
