Dre's lump :/ UPDATE 5/4- bigger and icky looking

Try warm compresses and/or putting him in warm water on and off until it opens again. Peanut's abcesses that he just had was a pain in the butt to get open once it closed over again. You don't however, as I was told, want it to pop inside him. If you think he is in pain maybe give him some infant advil before trying to open it. My GMC is that way - put him in water for a little bath and he whines like he is being tortured!!

ok is it infant advil or childrens? I forget- I need to go get some at the drug store, the last bottle I had expired and got tossed out

do you have the dosing?

I did put him in a bowl last night and poured warm water over it, but getting him to sit and soak wasn't possible

I'm still trying to find the link I posted about some kind of lump that should not be squeezed, to see if what his happening with this thing, is the same.
I'm getting very nervous about it and think maybe he needs to see the vet and have it removed.
It seems a LOT bigger but most of it is under the skin, and the thing is rock hard.


all the cysts I've had, had some "give" to them, as they were all fluid filled.
I never encountered a cyst with such a solid feel to it.

gonna mix up some baytril for him too, in case the red inflamed area is the start of an infection.

I can't understand why the top of it, the exposed part, suddenly got SO much bigger then it was when it first opened.......?

It was about the size of er, a pencil eraser at first. Not it's the size of er, probably a dime. (looking around for something to compare it to) No longer round either, it's an oval

I was told infant and nope on the dosage - I always ask here

quick update- well after one day of looking a bit inflamed/irritated, it's gone back to being smaller and dried up looking, no redness or swelling.

I think this is one that jsut needs to be left alone

but just in case I think of messing with it again, Dre is now sleeping UNDER Norry, or rather, Norry is draping himself over Dre,
Norry is letting me know that I best leave his brother alone!

Those are called guard rats! Popper used to hire them too to keep the evil humans away! Some of my other rats hire them from time to time too. However, you can usually buy them off with treats... :winksmile:

Wow, he is good!!

Just catching up on things... It sounds like your boy has a cyst. There are all kinds of types of cysts, some that are fluid filled, some that have more solid things in them.
"Dermoid Cyst - The dermoid cyst is a slowly growing benign cystic lesion lined by stratified squamous epithelium that exhibits a well-defined granular cell layer, the formation of orthokeratin, and associated skin appendageal structures (sebaceous glands, swear glands, or hair follicles)."
Color Atlas of Clinical Oral Pathology, 2nd Ed.
I would say you are safe leaving it for now. Sometimes the skin over the cyst will get thin or even rupture, letting it clear out. If it is solid I wouldn't squeeze it too much unless it looks like you can get the stuff out. Soaking him in warm water can't hurt and may help things along.

update on Dre's lump- well it looked very dried out and was lifted up on one side like a huge scab about to come off-

so I did it- I put my fingernail under the edge of it and pop! the whole ugly thing came out in one pc
It is surprisingly small considering what it looks like ON or rather, *in* him

I took a couple of photos of the solid clump that came out, but they aren't very clear.
I'm nearly 100% positive now that its a cyst that dried out, everything in it looks like dehydrated toothpaste with no odor at all.
I even cut it in half, it's very hard and very dry and looks just like the dried up cysts that I saw photos of.

there was a tiny bit of blood under it but no actual bleeding.
I stuck Dre in a big deep bowl of warm water to rinse it out,
he was less than thrilled with this but didn't fight it as much as I thought he would
These are such good boys I have!

I'll keep an eye on it to make sure it heals without getting infected but I think he's gonna be just fine!

Great news it finally cleared out! Now momma can grow her stomach lining back. :giggle:
