I have to say I am super proud of myself right now. I just learned to see using a machine and have made my first (of many, I suspect) hammock!!

Now I just have to figure out how to put the grommets in...

I'm sure your babies are going to love their new hammie!
I buy grommets at Fabricville, and the package has both sides of grommets and the tool to put them together (and instructions.)
You need a flat, hard surface, a hammer and a pointy, sharp pair of scissors to make a small hole in the fabric before you insert the grommet.

It's such a good feeling to create something and see your finished products. Such a feeling of accomplishment. I'm sure your ratties will love it. It looks much better than anything I could do.

I stopped sowing my hammocks together because they ended up just becoming chew toys. haha. I just use cut up towels and I don't think they mind! Congrats on learning the sowing machine, I still don't really know how it works :p

Ellie seems to like it. Rosie doesn't like to be cocooned in anything which I find really strange. She doesn't like any of the fabrics things I have hanging. Just her little house and her tube. Strange little baby.

Very nice. :) Sewing is very rewarding.. I can sew but I never made my rats things yet, this thread inspires me to.

Quickly made a bonding pouch.

Next projects are two double decker hammocks and a bunk bed!
And a cube which I've started, but I'm not confident enough yet.

That is so awesome! I wish I could sew. :) The hammocks and cage liners I purchased a year ago (for no small sum of money, I may add) are just about thoroughly "renovated" at this point.

I worry in the back of my mind that the grommets might be a choking hazard. Anyone else had problems or concerns with this? I have always just used strips of fabric big the grommets do look really nice.

I never thought about that but I don't think I'll be using grommets anymore anyway. For some reason strips of fabric never even crossed my mind.

The grommets are big enough that rats would be unable to choke on them. And they're made of metal, so they won't chew them. If you have big chewers, it takes no time at all to chew through a strap...

My now six pack of destruction has absolutely NO problem chewing through the fleece strips or taking out the grommets. However, since fleece doesn't really fray I have just been cutting little slits where the grommets would go and that works just fine. I end up cutting the strips off after they chew through a couple anyway. My other babies are just fine with the strips. I'm surprised, but so far they have left the no sew cubes and hammocks alone - I thought for sure they would go after the knot strips...
