i took fivel ( some of you might remember the little black hoody from the park) out on the couch today and he started peeing blood- and a lot of it- all the rat vets are closed and im not sure what to do. other symptoms are: poofy fur, half closed eyes, less interest in food, and is much less active and curious than usual. im guessing it is a uterine infection but is he going to be okay for the night and what can i do to make him feel more comfortable? what else might it be?

it could be a urinary infection, male rats dont have a uterus. im not too helpful on that but im gonna research and see if i can help find an answer.

:emb: i know male rats dont have uterus i meant urinary. i know enough about general anatomy that male creatures don't usually have uterus. and thank you

looked at other threads. seems that it probably is a UTI. I would take Fivel to the vet as soon as you can. I understand they arent open right now. Ive dealt with that situation before. All you can do is offer some yummy mushy foods like baby food, baby cereal (irresistable foods lol) and keep him warm. I'll let the other posters with more experience with UTIs take it from here.

When my hamsters got that back in high school I'd give them some all natural sugar free cranberry juice but don't substitute it for fresh water try to get as many liquids in it as possible also offer yogurt sometimes that helps as well as about the pain I'm not going to give any advice on that due I don't want to be wrong I've never had to deal with this in rats but the cranberry juice and yogurt is a safe call and might help with it I really hope he is okay. It might help through the night until you can get him to a vet tomorrow :(

It could be a few things from blood in his urine could be bacteria, a fungal infection or from a parasite called bladder threadworms.... So it's good to get him to a vet as soon as possible to be put on some antibiotics

i cant believe that he went from perfectly healthy to sick like this in one day. my mother is bringing him to the vet tomorrow, i wish she let me come with her since im the only one who knows about rats in my family and he is mine :sad3: i will try yogurt for now

Unsweetened cranberry juice would be great. You can syringe feed him small amounts. If you can, keep him on paper towel tonight and take the towels to the vet tomorrow so they can see them. (It may or may not work, depending on whether he shreds them or not.) That should give the vet a good idea of what's going on. Good luck at the vet tomorrow!

@victoria im already giving the vet my math home work he pissed on! i think that is the oddest excuse for not doing your homework " after my rat tried eating my homework, he pissed blood onto it!!! i swear im telling the truth!!!!!" oh well, never really liked homework :cheeky:
and @ mammarat thank you :hugs:
