I am getting posted to Valcartier, QC in early July, and the only available military housing has a no pet policy. I therefore have to get rid of my dog, Tank.
Tanks is three years old, neutered, kennel trained, and very fond of being outdoors and active. However, he's a special case in that he's a fairly large dog, rescued twice over, and has some behavioral problems, in this case, hand biting of strangers. I have worked him very hard on obedience training, muzzle training, and have tried to give him a safe, happy, and secure environment; however the problem is persistent and probably always will be. For someone willing to work with him, get to know his quirks and triggers, and manage his issues, he's still a great dog. I love him to death.
He's guaranteed for life with bark busters, who will make themselves available to assist with any training or management of behavioral issues.
Tanks is a very strong willed dog who requires an equally strong willed owner. Given his issues I will absolutely NOT allow him to go to a home with children. He has never shown any sort of behavior towards children, however it is not a risk I'm willing to take, or to let someone else take.
Update: I now have one week to find tank a home, or else I will either have to put him down, or put him in a shelter which will likely put him down anyway because of his behavioral issues. I would very dearly like to avoid this!
