Just saw this thread. Had read about all the babies in another thread but hadn't seen this one with all the pictures:) The babies look a lot like my two litters. My Moms are most likely siblings of these moms since they came from the same person.

I'm amazed at the ingenuity to figure out housing/transportation for that many rats and you guys are all incredible for going the extra mile for all these guys. Love the little one that rode on the front seat with you SQ:)

Thanks everyone!

No trip today ... At the last minute, I was told that NRM did not have a drive and it would have been very late tonight if I had unexpectedly added 2 to 2.5 hrs more to my trip by driving to Saint John to pick up the 26 rescues on the way to Saint Stephen.

EDIT: due to a misunderstanding ...
I waited to hear back re a definate time for our meeting at the border, so I didn't leave
the MRR volunteer, Willow, drove to the Saint Stephen border thinking I had already left
and NRM, in Saint John, made no plans to meet up with anyone or send the 26 rats she had

Unfortunately I did not have anyway to contact the MRR volunteer except through email.
The volunteer did not phone or email letting me know she was on her way
and I guess NRM didn't phone the volunteer re scheduling the trip for Sunday, although I thought that she had.

So the trip did not happen, although Willow the volunteer made a 8 hr drive.

I will make arrangements and plan to drive hours out of my way to pick and transport the rats at NRM's ... if they are ready to go

Much Thanks goes to:

Dr Scott Stewart who did a health check on the 47 rescue ratties, spent time writing a letter for customs and only charged me $80.
He must have volunteered his time to help these ratties, because according to my estimate, the bill should likely have been at least three times that amount.

EDIT: I had a vet apt today (April 27) and found that the woman was mistaken. The bill was actually $160 for the exam of 47 rats ... which is still a wonderful break. I paid it today.

Thank you to the Islandview Vet Hospital and staff for donating 3 used cat carriers and 2 used cages that they had in storage so that the 47 ratties would have something safe to make the trip in.

Had a great visit with Holly last night and got to see all the babies:) The little neuro babies are similar to my neuro baby but not as pronounced. They're a little on the smaller side than mine but that's likely a result of their previous home/mom's diet. Now that they have been with Holly they are playing and growing like weeds:)

The video quality isn't great as it was dark.
[BBvideo 425,350:1o2we5x9]http://youtu.be/XZ04LkrJqH4[/BBvideo:1o2we5x9]

The symptoms are ataxia. Hind limbs are prone to be extended and rigid. Balance problems (left and right, no particular shift one direction). They fed from my hand last night:)

Hey everyone! I am happy to announce that the rats are all now safely in MRR custody! Our volunteer, Kayla, picked them up from Holly at the border and is on her way to my house now. I will keep them overnight and then start distributing them to their foster families tomorrow.

Thank you again to everyone who helped make this happen, both in Canada and in America. Rat people totally rock!

Bummer, not on Facebook... :(

Hmmm ... today I found out the cost I was given for the vet exam was incorrect.
I was billed $160 (not $80) .... still an amazing deal for the exam of 47 ratties and a typed document meeting CDC requirements.
I have an amazing vet!

The trip was a great success and the ratties were saved thanks to the efforts of many people.

Just a note of caution: If you are traveling with rats to the USA and you are not a citizen of the USA,
then all the rats must be vet checked and you need a letter from the vet stating that they are all healthy and that none of the rats is an Gambian pouched rat. It is illegal to import Gambian pouched rat into the USA.

It is also helpful to contact the US government in Washington DC and have them fax you the requirements for bring rats into the USA. You will need this official document in writing to show the USA border guards.
It also helps to have a US government official contact the supervisor at the border so that the USA border guards are cooperative.
