I'm curious.. WHY do you hate it?

I know you didn't ask me, but I will tell you why I would never have it in my house.

1. They are owned by Proctor and Gamble who have tortured and killed millions of animals testing their products.

2. Iam's is junk food and is like feeding your animals McDonalds every day.

Ah I see..
I don't get how people could do that..
No lams here then if I should ever decide to get a animal that could eat that crap..

Nay, Iams is pretty crud. Better than, say, Purina or a lot of the other big names, but it's crap. Good rule of thumb with dog/cat food... if there's commercials on TV, it's no good.

thanks for the post

this is one good reason to vary the foods you feed your pet, if you have to buy commercial foods.

even on the high end natural stuff, i think it's a good idea to get your cat used to eating different brands and flavors of food, if only for the reason that some day you might not be able to get your cat's favorite food. If they've never eaten and accepted another food you could have trouble on your hands with a cat refusing to eat...

I wish there was a good recipe for homemade cat food........

I can't do raw, it just grosses me out too much (plus don't have the freezer space, the equipment nor the $$$) but I hate not knowing for sure what is in the food I give my cats

You have to be careful if you switch foods, because cats can react badly to it. It is always recommended to ease them into a new cat food, and it is my experience that it is good advice. When I have fed my group a different cat food than normal, it has resulted in diarrhea and vomiting.
I agree that when your cats get older, they need to be introduced to foods that are better for their age and living arrangements, but take it slowly. Ease them into it.

It depends on the cat actually. I used to think that was true until I realized, my cats can go from raw to canned to dry in any order without any upsets. It makes my life (and theirs) super easy if I happen to run out of a certain food.

Yes, it does depend on the animal, but unless you want your animal in pain then you are going to decide to be better safe than sorry and ease them into it until you can determine how they are going to react to the change.
I would rather they not be in discomfort, and ease them into it, than just take the chance that they will be ok and be wrong.
My convenience is not taken into account.

oh, me personally, I don't switch brands/flavors, I've *always* offered them different ones

When I get cat food, I'll get a case of one thing, and a case of something else, and so on, and at each meal they'll either get something different or I'll mix them together (esp when there's one food they prefer and one that's low on their list of tasty things, I'll mix the two together)

I asked my vet (several vets, in fact) about this and they said that there's very little difference, in terms of how it will affect a cat's digestion, in going from one brand or flavor of CANNED cat food to another.
Switching from dry to canned or canned to dry, that's different.

It's generally accepted now, that dry food isn't the best thing for cats, for a lot of reasons. That said, I admit, I've got a girl that thinks she'll die without a few kibbles so she gets an 1/8 of a teaspoon per day as a treat.

I'd feed raw, except for the reasons cited earlier. I got some frozen raw food from some one once and my male cat loved it, but my girls would not touch the stuff. They did not recognize it as food, but then they used to eat dry food before I adopted them. My boy was a stray who caught and ate birds as well as scavenging, so he knows what fresh meat is LOL

Every cat is different, but if you think that your cat is subject to digestive upsets, all the more reason to get them accustomed to eating different foods.

Some cats may have trouble digesting the really high protein foods that are almost all meat, but there are pre biotics you can give them to ease the transition. (pre biotics are good for handling a change to a higher protein food, pro biotics are good for balancing gut flora, esp that's been thrown out of whack by some meds like antibiotics, at least that's the way I understand it.)

I guess I should have prefaced this with "every cat is different" but I do believe that in general it's a good idea to introduce your cats to different foods.

Not only to avoid a situation where they refuse to eat because you can't get, or can no longer give them, the only food they've ever eaten
but also because you're more likely to get a good, or at least better, balance of different nutrients this way.

Here's some really good info on feeding your cat:

Yeah, like Petunia I've neveer fed a single brand even when I used to feed them dry. I used to mix EVO and Go! Grain-free, now I feed raw but if something happens and we run out I can feed them canned for just one day, and then back to raw the next. Plus every Friday is fish day so they get a can of sardines, and the next day will be raw.

I also do it to set them up for success, they now recognize raw, canned and dry all as food so if they ran away, and someone else found them they'd eat whatever they were given. My cats won't fast themselves (unless they were sick).

I seemed to have lost this post the past couple of days but Vanessa pretty much covered it. A lot of things like this fall on deaf ears
