So mister Casper has been having a hard time breathing lately and I had some remaining Baytril that I was giving him and he got better for a while. I eventually ran out of the Baytril and he took a turn for the worse. I finally was able to get him into the vet today to get some more meds. The vet suggested, as he always does, to nebulize little Caspy, but I had to refuse. He has to stay overnight for that and the last time I had Suri done the bill was well over $300 and I just don't have that right now. Do you guys think that was a bad decision? I did get the baytril, does anyone know if there is something else I can do for him to help him breath easier?

Also he hates, I mean HATES taking his meds. Many times I have to fight with him to get it down him, and as I sad in the past he can be really picky about what he eats, does anyone know what is extra tasty with meds? I am going to get some baby apple sauce later today because sometime he will eat that...but other suggestions are welcome!!!

What would they have nebulized him with or was it to give oxygen?
I won't nebulize my rats once they are already quite sick, it seems to make them way too stressed which then makes it worse.
I use strawberry Nestle Quick when I have yucky meds.

He nebulizes them with the meds, like baytril or what ever they put in those nebulizers, but I know for a fact its not just oxygen.

About the stressing him out, thats what happens when its time for him to take meds. He would attack the syringe if I gave him the chance. By the time I am done with the meds he is sooo stressed and because of all the energy he puts into getting away from me his breathing only gets worse, so I really need to find a way to give him meds without making him soo mad.

The baytril is favored, I'll try adding the nesquik tonight see if that makes a difference...he's just the biggest pain when it comes to being picky!!

Unfortunately Caspy has taken a turn for the worse. He was taking his meds nicely with strawberry syrup for the past 3 days but today he looks aweful, he has no interest in food. He is also very poofy and is having a rather difficult time breathing...the poor baby. I am just going to make him as comfortable as I can tonight. Poor boy!

Poor little guy... I have noticed that sometimes they get really bad days but try again tomorrow, he might perk up. Are you making sure he's well hydrated?

:hugs: Hope he gets to feeling better soon. Get the strawberry Ensure. It's the most loved in my house.

And yes, the strawberry quick/water mix is a lifesaver.

I would put him on Doxy + Baytril combo, works the best!
Also, tryign mixing it with baby cereal.
I put mine on bread, or lemon crackers and mine love it, and I dont have flavoured baytril haha

I defiantely experienced this with one of my boys, one day I would think it was just about time to let him go and then the next he would bounce right back. Strawberry ensure was one of his favs but unfortunately its not so great if you are giving doxy. If its looking like he is going to be on meds for the rest of his life then you could always do what my vet suggested to me: have him constantly on baytril and only give doxy (for 2 weeks at a time) when he gets really bad. My vet suggested that because after 2 weeks doxy starts to become less effective (like building up an immunity) but after a break from it, it will work again. This way you can also give ensure daily if you are worried about keeping him hydrated and also ensure is great for masking baytril.

:hugs: I know what a sucky situation this is...sending healing thoughts your way.

Be careful giving ensure while giving doxy, milk products dont go god with Doxy as it looses its effectiveness. dont give milke 3 hours before or after.

I always notice this too in my boys.
