Hi. I’m new here, but I have a pretty serious situation.
Yesterday, I found my 1.5 year old rattie named Ren down in his little hut. Hadn’t moved all day, so I took him out. He was barely moving and extremely lethargic. I took him to my vet, and they told me he had pneumonia and prescribed me Baytril & Doxycycline. I gave both to him last night, and this morning he was doing worse since he wouldn’t eat or drink without me syringing it to him so I took him back this afternoon. They gave him oxygen for about 30 minutes and told me the best option was euthanasia, but I wasn’t ready to let go. I heard great things about Zithromax and I wanted to try it. The vet prescribed me 100mg/5ml SUSP of Zithromax to be given only .25 ml once daily. Also Baytril is 20mg/ml to be given .3ml once daily as well. Is this dosage correct? I want to give him the highest possible dose he needs for him to get better. I’m determined and hopeful for this guy. He is 582-587g and I think he has some fight in him. I was told he wouldn’t make it home but he’s made it several hours since and is still kicking!!

I would also greatly appreciate any other tips as well. I have been syringing him pedialyte on and off as well as oxbow critical care. Anything else would be lovely. I can’t lose this boy.

I'm not good when it comes to medication or dosages but I just have to ask... If no one is holding him or supporting him and he's just on the floor/in the cage, anywhere, is his head tilted at all ? Does he fall over to one side ? Has he tried to walk ? If so does he walk in a circle, does he hobble, things like that. If you could get a video of him resting and post it to YouTube then link it here someone with more experience might be able to help out more

He has kind of a head tilt sometimes? Not really. When he is placed on his legs he kind of drags himself slowly and he used to kind of flop over. He was kind of dragging along in circles earlier. I can try to get a vid tomorrow

How bad is his breathing. What do you hear when you hold his side's to your ears and listen to his breathing?

His zithro dose should be 0.58 ml once a day (you can split this to twice a day initially but it's not necessary.
The baytril dose should be 0.44 ml twice a day. The vet is using normal dosing but these higher doses are more effective and should hopefully give him a better chance.

Honestly his breathing is on and off. His breaths are definitely slower and when i pick him up they become crackly and sound like a whine or very fluid-y.

If he is very late stage pneumonia, is the wobbling normal? If he is super weak. I have noticed small improvement in the past 12 hrs. He is at least gaining the strength to wobble around, where as before he would not budge.
