I have two six month old boys. They are by far the most fearless rats I've ever owned, but the other day I had a friend over for a few hours and now they are acting terrified most of the time. My suspicion is that they smelled my friend's cats on her, and that she left the scent behind in my apartment. It's been almost a week and I've done everything I can think of to dispel the scent- lit candles, vacuumed, opened windows. My boys are still acting just as petrified. Any thoughts on what I can do to get them feeling comfortable again?

Any thoughts at all would really be appreciated. They're not getting any better. They're not eating or drinking much. They do not seem happy. I'm really at a loss here, I've never seen anything like this. If this is going to be their life now they'd be better off in a different home.

I think you need to first make sure it's not something physical. Hold their sides to your ears to listen to their lungs.
If their eyes are bright, they are active, eating and drinking normally then it will just take time for them to get through their spooky phase. These phases van happen with younger rats. One minute you have playful outgoing rats the next they are jumpy, wary and will act like you are a scary monster...and I've never had a cat lol. Don't force them into anything just give them time to work it out.

Okay, thank you. They seem to be healthy. I'm just going to try leaving them alone for a few days and see if they recover.
