Hey yall! I'm not really a fan of giving pets as gifts, but apparently my family doesnt feel the same lol! I was surprised today with a hairless rat from a pet store. I've never had one before and I am doing some research to see if they need special care, but I was wondering if anyone had suggestions from their personal experience!

She may also be pregnant, which is another thing I have no experience with. I think she's pretty young - she is small and was at the store for a week in a cage with 3 unneutered males. She is very skittish but seems to be doing ok. I've already set her up in a cage with a few toys from my other rats, and within smelling distance of them. I plan to get her checked at a vet soon (I definitely dont trust a pet store that keeps all their rats together like that). If she does seem pregnant, I think the plan is to reach out to a local breeder for some help or advice, since I dont really have the ability or time to be raising little ratties!

Post some pics so we can determine her age. Did you see the boys she was with, were they adult or her age? Were they nakies like her or furred?

As for determining pregnancy its best to weigh her on a digital scale daily at the same time. You are looking for a steady increasing gain pattern. Baby rats growing is a bit different than baby rats growing IN a baby.

They were also naked rats! My mother says they were obviously bigger than her but since I wasnt there that's all I know! Thanks for the weighing advice, I'll get a scale and start tracking her.
