I'm a brand new rat momma and my rat Roach (4 months, male, intact) started having this redness around his left eye last night. I did nothing different regarding cleaning, food or stresses but he lives in his enclosure with his half brother who is much smaller. I do not think they fought as they are usually pretty nice and affectionate with eachother. The only thing I can think of is I bathed him on Thursday and he wasn't happy but that was a few days ago...
Hes not breathing heavily or differently, not sneezing and has no porphoryn around the rest of his face or body, just this left eye. He squints it a lot and it's a little runny (clear liquid) but has the red crusties around it. There's also no bulging or visible trauma to the eye or surrounding tissue. I would love a suggestion if I should hit the vet or wait it out.

Thus could just be a classic case of something stuck in the eye.! If it is it'll work it's way out just like with any other animal. Can you smell around the eye.? If it stinks then he has an infection and absolutely needs a vet- but I suspect it's something stuck. If you're really worried you can call the vet and ask them what they think and if they think he should be seen or not. But otherwise just watch for any behavioral changes or eye changes and go from there.!

Thanks for reply. Yeah I have a feeling it's as simple as that. He has no problem grooming right now, he's not stinky near the eye, and he's not lethargic. He's even eating fine like the pig he is haha. I've even used my stethoscope to check his breathing and heart and that's all fine. Thanks your comment made me feel a tad better. I'll just try to keep it clean and monitor his behaviours.

Perfect.! Sounds like he's going to be back to normal in no time.!
