Today I walked into the local pet store, meaning to pick up some toys to furnish the new CN... I was planning to get some more ratties soon since Willow's buddy passed recently. Well, I spotted the rat (tanks) and saw the two cutest little PEW boys curled up in their igloo... their tank was tiny and so filthy- their tails had poo caked on, and one of them was sneezing over and over :( They obviously wanted attention as they immediately came up to the glass- I felt so bad and I couldn't help taking them, thinking to myself that I was meaning to get new ratties anyways and the rescues around all didn't have rats (I've contacted them repeatedly over the last few weeks... they must be sick of me, LOL)

I know this is a rescue forum and I too believe rescuing is the way to go, so I won't talk much about the pet store... but I don't regret getting the boys :)

Anyways, I'll attach some pics as soon as I can get good ones! The boys haven't stopped moving since I put them in their CN, I think they're astonished at just the size of it! (Wait till I put the top half on!) They don't even know what treats are :( I offered them some cheerios and they refused!

I don't have names yet, so I'm open to suggestions (especially once I get some pics in!) I'll also keep you guys updated if you're interested :)

Congratulations 🎉 Admittedly, I’ve done the same thing before, except with a reptile. I don’t blame you!

Is the one boy still sneezing? I know virtually nothing about rat respiratory issues (not an owner yet). Is it true that once they have an URI, that they’ll have it for life? If so, with treatment do symptoms disappear? Can a non-symptomatic rat transfer the illness to your healthy rat?

He is still sneezing, but fortunately he’s sneezing less and less :)

About the URIs, I think it depends on how serious it is. I think a newly developed URI would be possible to cure completely with antibiotics, while a rat that has had an untreated URI for months would likely have the same infection for the rest of his life. (Even with treatment) That’s all I know- lilspaz68 might be able to help you more with the questions :)

I decided to name them Comet and Spark :)

Both of the boys are warming up more to me and their new home- hopefully once I've socialized them I can introduce them to Willow- he's getting a bit unhappy.

Hi! It’s me from the RatForum, you probably think I’m a creepy stalker by now 🥲 But, when you mentioned ”another” rat forum, I was intrigued and I decided to see what was out there and soon enough here I am ☺
Anyway, congRATS on the new ratlings! Great name choices. I only wish you the best on this new rat journey! 🥳

LOL, hi! I definitely don’t think you’re a stalker :giggle: The rat shack is a great forum and many people here are really knowledgeable - especially about rat health :)

Anyways, thanks! I’m normally bad at names, lol. I’m really excited to welcome Comet and Spark into my life :D

Hooray! I am now relived from the title of “Creepy Rat Stalker”! 😂
Anyway, yeah- I think that getting Comet and Spark from a pet store was more of a yay! move then a oops- move because they likely would’ve been a 6 year old’s present :(

Yup, I really hope more parents research animals before getting them for their young children.
However, for me, I am against supporting chain pet stores because I don't support how they breed animals- so it was sort of a slip, LOL! I definitely don't regret getting Comet and Spark though :)

Yes, I definitely do not support getting animals from pet stores either, they get their animals from pet mills :(
That said, I agree that getting Comet and Spark was not necessarily a bad move.

They definitely are! If I am correct, this forum was made because an old Rat Forum user, Rat Daddy, was spreading toxic information, thankfully he is banned now. You can read the drama here: Vicious rat, or just confused? - SNIP TIME FOR CASS!

You are going to give them a great life. I know rescuing is always better but you saved two lives from being miserable and sick.

Aww, two little PEW's. I can't wait to see them.
