I don't know if this is the right place to put this but I've wanted to tell you all about what's been happening here. I live in a rented room as part of a large unit of rooms. It's called an SRO (single room only). As you know I've been on this forum for a little while and got my first rats in Sept 2019 on my birthday. It was the right time and I needed some hope and emotional support animals as I've got spinal disability and suffer from Major Depression and social anxiety/anxiety. I've lived in this same apt for 18 years. This building has always been pet friendly with people having all sorts of different pets.

Rats, I found, were my perfect support animals. They could come out in public with me, to ease my social anxiety and make me feel more a part of society, they are empathic and intelligent. Rats quickly became MY ONLY family. I do everything with them. I always had at least one rat on my shoulder when I would leave my place to take out the garbage or go visit a neighbour or even go to the end of the hall where there is a large window where I would sometimes stand for a few minutes getting some fresh air with my rats on my shoulder.

There is a lady who lives next door to me who, shortly after I got my first two rats, would bully me in the hallway because she didn't like rats. I would simply be passing by her in the hallway and she'd make these rude comments like 'disgusting' or she'd make that annoyance noise like 'UGGGH!' She would also say things like 'you're putting those rats in my face!' None of which was true, I was simply passing her in the hallway.

THe staff told me she was afraid but I found that hard to believe because a few times we would sit at our open doors and I'd have my rats on my shoulder and she'd talk to me like nothing was wrong. So I don't believe she's afraid of them. I honestly don't know what her problem is.

In May of 2020 I wrote my first complaint about a neighbour in the 18 years I'd lived here. I told management she was bullying me in the hall if I happened to pass by her with my rats. She was told many times to stop doing this. Many times the staff would complain about how she'd endlessly complain about my rats. I only saw her like once every couple weeks just passing in the hall but she would complain endlessly and lie to staff about my rats. So she was told many times to stop confronting me and bullying me in the hall.

Then her grown son (who had already been violent with another tenant) moved in to her suite illegally for months. She worked full time and he was living in there. A few months ago he threatened to throw me out a window with my rats. He was taking over the bullying where his mother left off, only he's 6'2" and had already been violent to another tenant and I'm tiny and much older. I immediately told staff downstairs who told me to call the police. I went up to my suite to call police and her son came out of her place and beat the living hell out of my other neighbour who had fancy rats as pets.

The police came, and her son was trespassed permanently from the building.

Over these few months, she's been dying to get back and me and my neighbour. She even said, in front of me, that she was going to get rid of me and the other tenant (M). She wanted revenge, and so she went over management's head to the owners of the building, making up all sorts of stories about my rats, lying through her teeth.

On Dec 9th only myself and my other neighbour with Fancy Rats got a threat of homelessness if we didn't give up our rats in 30 days. There was no way I was going to give up my girls. I never signed a no pet agreement and it was only myself and my neighbour who got this eviction threat. My neighbour (lets call her M) took all her rats downstairs and told the manager she was giving them up. So she had 1 cage with 4 boys and 1 cage with one girl. The manager was supposed to call the SPCA to come get them.

I couldn't give up my emo supp animals. There was no way I was going to give them up. I decided to fight for my rights.

However, M's rats were never picked up by the SPCA. They sat in the back office for at least a day. They ran out of food and water. Night staff person got worried and asked me what to do since midnight was approaching and these poor rats were scared. I said they should go back to their owner, M.

Well the night staff tried to approach M about the fact the rats were just left there for hours and it was almost midnight and the SPCA wasn't coming to get them. She got so upset and violent.

She knocked on my door at about 10pm and I opened it a crack, she pushed me in the neck, out of her way and then proceeded to scream at the top of her lungs in my place. She scared me and my rats. SHe was out of control. I managed to get her out of my place, well, she left after a couple minutes. Then I locked my door and didn't want to let her again, because she pushed me in the neck and I was afraid. She tried kicking my door down. I called the police. She was kicking and punching my door, screaming at the top of her lungs every obscenity in the book. The police came. Told her to stay away from me.

For two nights after, she would scream at my door intermittently for hours, swearing at me. I was so scared. I called the police and told them I wasn't leaving my room and hadn't left since the first night. That 3rd night, she assaulted a staff member and was arrested and put in jail.

Anyway, she finally came to my door and threatened me to 'watch my back' and then said to 'go call/tell the cops.' So I did. I called. I'd been hiding in my suite for 2 weeks afraid of her and she finally threatened me. Every time she'd go by my door she'd yell "FU!' It was horrible.

The police came again and mentioned that she'd have to be evicted or they were going to give me a protection order.

The management told me I had to keep my rats in cages at all times and if I needed to take them out of the building that NOBODY could see them. I have several methods of taking them out but they need to breathe and I need my hands free. I have a backpack I wear on the front like a bonding pouch. I also have a nice Columbia jacket that they ride in the sleeves. I spoke to two upper managment people who told me to 'do my best' to hide them.

I hadn't showered in 2 weeks. I was afraid of using the bathrooms, since they are common area bathrooms and I couldn't cook or use the kitchen. I had to cancel my homecare nurse because I was afraid. At this time my mental illness and physical disabilities were really getting bad and I needed to walk with my rats to help me stay sane so I snuck out with one of my rats in my coat and someone saw her little face sticking out and the manager gave me a breach letter. I suppose she expects my animals not to breathe oxygen.

I'll end it here, but there's much more to this. Needless to say, I have to video record myself walking in and out of the building and every time I leave my place. I am sneaking out my girls in the backpack but I have to zip it up all the way and they're not getting enough air. I have to run out of the building and back into it when I have them so nobody sees me. I have to take the stairs, which I find hard due to my disability.

I have a lawyer/legal advocate.

We are trying to find methods of satisfying these people but ultimately I think it's time for me to move. The building management, upper management is looking at moving me into a bachelor, furnished with bathoom and kitchen in the suite, all self contained. That's where I need to be. I have two tenants who are just out to get me in any way they can and my entire life has been shot to pieces.

Just because one woman doesn't like my rats passing her in the hallway and because her violent adult son was trespassed. She vowed to get me and M back, and she did.

I'm going to fight back but it's been very hard. My mental illness and physical disabilities are at their worst now. I still have some hope though. I try to get through each day. I think what they're doing to me is wrong and it's based on prejudice and lies. It was a targeted attack by this neighbour who lies about my rats.

I can’t believe that you, as a good / responsible tenant of 18 years, could be dismissed like that. It pains me how much money talks, and how the louder voice or the biggest tantrum triumphs over common sense. What a cluster truck.

You don’t deserve this, it isn’t okay. I’m sorry.

I hope they can accommodate you correctly. Unfortunately, as someone who’s been backed into a wall a few times, I know it’s not always the answer to just pack up and leave. I know the feeling of having no place else to go.

Remember that this situation and the behavior of others is not a reflection of you. Few people have the willingness or ability to stand up for others, so we are often alone in our battles. You’ve been through so much. But, as difficult as it was, you’ve made it through every single one. Whatever happens trust you have the strength to get through this.

All the best.

Thank you for the support messages. They mean a lot to me. I'm not giving up my girls. They are not going anywhere. I'd rather be homeless with my girls than be without them. Other people in the building have fancy rats but it was only myself and M that were targeted.

The tenant that hates my rats had written several complaints to the manager, lying about my rats, and then when she wasn't getting anywhere, went over their head. The reason the complaints to management went nowhere is because they knew she was lying as well.

My lawyer knows I have a good case. He's willing to fight for me.

When I was served with a threat to get rid of my girls or get evicted, none of the staff knew it was the tenant next door to me that was responsible. Now they know, and they're pissed at her, because they know she's a liar and just wants to make trouble for me. But will they fight for me? Will they do the right thing? Doubtful.

I'm so happy to read that you're already in touch with your lawyer. Are there any special protections for emotional support animals in your area?

If you do need to keep sneaking your rats out for the time being, maybe you could get one of those fashionable pet carriers. They have some that look a lot like purses but that still have mesh portions so they can get air.

That's about all I can think up. Wishing you and your rats the best!

This just makes me sick! I'm so sorry. She'll get hers. One way or the other....karma is a b!tch! Stay strong for you and your girls. You got this!

Good to know that you have a strong side of the case. Eventually she will be the one who has to give up. I couldn't even imagine how inconsiderate that person is!

It is good to see how you love and care for your rats ( how are they doing?).

well, ultimately I'm going to move into hopefully better housing. i just don't know when.

because of this jackass rat bigot tenant, the manager made it such that i couldn't carry my rats on my shoulder or even poking their heads out of my jacket sleeve. they had to be totally invisible coming in and out of the building. so that was tough. i had to put them in a backpack with no air access and run them in and out of the building, using stairs, which is hard for me with my physical disabilities.

However, I'm a member of the local rat club here in BC and i have some guardian rat loving angels who helped me out tremendously. They got me a handmade bag with double mesh so my rats could breathe and see out but nobody could see in. These angels drove over 2 hours to come and deliver it to me today and we took my girls in it for a short walk.

the rat bigot woman who made all these problems will get hers. i just wish i could witness it, ya know? To know it was done.

you wouldn't believe the drama and serious problems she's caused. She's a liar and made up a whole bunch of paranoid stories about my rats. she thinks i purposely bring my rats in the hallway when she's there. Now she works full time. I hardly ever pass her in the hall. She lies and says they're in the kitchen areas etc. she has never stopped lying and complaining about my rats. She kept writing letters to the manager, which were ignored because everyone knew my rats weren't loose in the halls or in the common areas like the kitchen. They knew i was a very responsible rat momma.

finally, she went over managers head to the owners of the building, with all her lies and paranoid delusions. and this is why myself and my neighbour who had fancy rats was served this threat to evict if we didn't rehome our rats in 30 days. Other fancy rat parents in the building never got these letters, just myself and M.

that threat letter caused a major meltdown of the other woman M who had rats. she gave hers up within minutes of getting the letter. she brought all her rats in their cages down to the office and surrendered them. they were supposed to be picked up by the spca which they never were. she had 4 boys in one cage and 1 girl in another.

when the Spca didn't come get them, she freaked out on me, pushed me in the neck when I opened the door to her and screamed so loud in my place it scared me and my rats, i got her out, then she tried kicking my door in. i called the cops. they told her to stop. For 3 nights she banged and screamed on my door for hours until on the 3rd night she BIT one of the staff members and was finally put in jail, only for a few hours, and she was back the next day.

She then threatened me. Police came back. She was given a last chance by the manager.

i hid in my suite i was so afraid of her. i hid for 3 weeks not going anywhere.

it has been horrible.

you might be asking, why did she get so mad at me, why does she blame me? Because she knew a crucial piece of info that i didn't have.

well, because she found out the reason why we were given the eviction threats, and she knew it was this other crazy tenant who hated my rats and lied and did anything she could to harm me, and by extension my other neighbour who had rats gets harmed too.

Myself and the other rat owner M took our rats out but i took my rats out in public almost every day. I didn't see the rat bigot lady every day, maybe once every 2-3 weeks but this rat bigot lady was going after me, and by extension, my rat loving neighbour.

Also, the rat bigot bullied me in the hallway from jan 2020 until i finally wrote an official letter to managment in May about her bullying me every time she passed me in the hall and I was taking my rats out.. staff had to constantly tell rat bigot lady that i was allowed to walk with my animals visible just like every other tenant. So rat bigot lady got her violent unstable adult son to take over where she left off.

he was living in mommy's suite illegally while she was gone all day at work.

In July of 2020 he threatened to throw me and my rats out a window. i phoned the police and while i was on the phone with them he came out of his mothers place (which is right next to mine) and beat the living hell out of the only other rat owner on the floor, M.

He was trespassed from the building and rat bigot lady swore revenge on both me and M. this is why she went over management's head to the owners of the building with her endless dishonest paranoid rantings about my rats and hence the 'new pet policy'. However, only myself and M were given these threat letters. Other fancy rat owners did not get them. In fact, management would have to evict half the building if they followed this new pet policy.

so there you have it. this was all the result of the rat bigot.

My rats are with me. I will NEVER give them up. They are going a little crazy cuz they want to walk with me every day. They are highly socialized ratties. I started doing trick training with them in lieu of walking. Here is Queenie doing some trick training

I hope the other rats are ok
Me too. I managed to get a video and a photo of them while they were sitting in the back office. Apparently, staff had to eventually bring them to the SPCA. I was really upset that she gave up her rats so easily. However, she never took her rats to the vet and did some very unethical things. I wonder about them too. You bet your last dollar I would've taken them if I had the means. Two of the boys and one girl were from the same litter as my Big Schpog. They are siblings. I got my first two rats from her when she accidentally brought home what she thought was a boy, but was a pregnant female. ( I highly doubt that story tbh). I think the female was impregnated by one of her male rats.

I told her to fight for her rats. She just gave them up in minutes after getting that threat. I don't think she really wanted them.

She loved them but was irresponsible.

So you know what one staff member did? Bought her a puppy! And this staff member, who is not a vet, gave this puppy shots of some kind.

She'll never be able to care for her new puppy properly. It will never see the inside of a vets office.

The last time I saw one of her rats just prior to all this craziness. she had 2 females in a cage, a mother and her daughter. The mother looked to me like she had a pituitary tumour. She never brought her to the vet and she may have even given her a lethal dose of street drugs. I know she died, suffering.

She should be prevented from having any more animals until she can prove she's responsible for them.

*Last thing I should mention: she had every right to keep her rats since neither of us signed a no fancy rat policy. It was only herself and I that were targeted. Legally, she would've won the case to keep her rats. I knew the threat letter was illegal and I knew I'd win the case so I kept my girls and went through every avenue I could to find a great lawyer. I don't have any money, I just knew to reach out for help to several orgs and I finally found a great lawyer who has told me I'd win this case easily.

This whole entire thing breaks my heart to pieces. All of the stuff that came after, the assault, the threats, the entire mass of chaos, could've been avoided had the rat bigot been brought to heel with her nonsense and her revenge plot exposed.

There are so many people on here supporting you that I had to pass on reading every comment. First Id like to say that you say you are small and frightened and that your limitations are causing you to be in fear for your life. Well, maybe you are in fear, but you are also a very strong and determined person as well. You could have bowed to the pressure as M did and given up your rats, but you didn't, you stood your gound, stood strong and chose to fight rather than fold. That tells me the type of character you have. To be a meek person who shies away from confrontation who stood strong for your rats and your rights, tells me how much you love your rats and care about them. I have 2 things I would like to point out. One... Be very careful about hiring a lawyer because so far, as I see it, management has been trying to accommodate you and support you as best they can. They don't own the building so they have no control over that, and they can not get involved between you and the woman neighbor or M, it's a tough matter for them but they have rules they have to follow, and luckily they have been mostly I'm your court because they are always on the side of right, not wrong, while always being mindful of everyone else feelings and thoughts. So they were seemingly with you until it went beyond just you and your neighbors, then they had to advocate for the entire residency. That said, they will always stand on the side of the majority also, if there are no other factors involved. That is why you had to start keeping them out of sight. Also, it actually was in your favor since they know that "out of sight, out of mind" is often an effective tool to help issues blow over. Anyway, so be very careful about hiring a lawyer. If I were you, I would have your lawyer put your case on the back burner until you have moved. And that new place sounds perfect for you, with your own kitchen and bathroom. Once you've moved, then I would say it's a better time to move forward with your case, which amounts to a case of discrimination in so many ways. If you do move, and hopefully you do soon, you will be so much happier too, which will help you with your disabilities immensely! If management doesn't help you get into that place soon, discuss the situation with your lawyer, who can most certainly help speed up the process. In the meantime I would consider the staying in your room as much as you can. If you have any friends nearby maybe you could spend some time over there, or they over your place. You are going to get though this soon. I'm so sorry this has happened to you. You were just minding your own business. And soon you will be happily living in a nice, new place with your own kitchen and bathroom. You will definitely get the last laugh! And I wish I lived nearby, I would love nothing more than to come hang out with you and your ratties and sit in the doorway or in front of the big window, and just WAIT for someone like M to say something! Anyway, just hang in there, you will be through this soon.

Thank you so much Rocket. It is true that the lower staff do support me. It's the manager who isn't. Tenant support workers support me too. It's the manager that is biased against me. I wish that in the beginning they would've just told me to hide my rats and why this was happening. They didn't. The manager went ahead and served me and M with a horrible threat of homelessness if we didn't give up our rats in 30 days. There was no way I was giving them up.

The reason I get to keep them is two fold: 1) because when new pet policies come in, and you've not signed anything, legally your animals are grandfathered in. You just can't have any more. 2) Because in June 2020, the adoption agency that I adopted 2 babies from. called the building and asked for the manager who said 'Yes. I could have rats.' Legally, they don't have a leg to stand on. This is what M didn't understand, or maybe she did, and just didn't want her rats anymore. I tend to think she didn't want them anymore because she never took them to vets and did some really unethical things with her rats.

Now I just have to wait for the Director to give me a nice new place to live. I just don't know when I'm going.

Hi again Big Schpog,

Under the circumstances, I am glad that this whole situation is going to work out for you. But still, I would stay low key, keep yourself out of sight as much as you can, not because you have to, just because it's the best thing for both you and your rats. Without your being stable and emotionally healthy, they could end up in a really bad situation. And I know you don't want that to ever happen. So, for both you and them, just keep things low key and soon you'll be able to be happy and free of stress. And you know your rats can sense your anxiety, so they will be right there with you through all of this. I'm just so happy that you have the legal right to keep them. That's why rescue agencies are the best to adopt rats from, they will absolutely back you up also. They did their job to ensure your rats were going to a good, stable, healthy home, and thankfully they did! I am a foster for a rat rescue and I accept the rats that can not be adopted, for whatever reason, usually health and behaviour, so I know how they are very particular about adopting, they usually do a house visit to see for themselves the environment the adopted rats are going to. And I know very well how good pet rats can be as support animals. In fact, the only reason that they are not professionally trained to be support animals is because if their life expectancy. Did you know rats can sense when a person is about to have a seizure? Or is going to have a panic attack, or an asthma attack even. All acute physiological problems can be forewarned by rats trained to recognize and signal it to the person or to another specific person. It's amazing, they are actually better than dogs at doing this, but because they only live a couple years or so, they aren't suitable for the amount of training involved to make it worth the investment. Unfortunately, they just aren't worth it. But they are worth every bit of it to you and me. I spent over $1600 on one of my beloved nekkid rats once. He was my personal rat, he wasn't a rescue owned rat, so I paid out of my own pocket. And I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Ok, it was nice talking to you, I am so relieved that you are going to be ok, and your rats will get to stay with you in a comfortable room until you move, and then you'll be able to relax and be happy again. Forever. With your beloved pet rats. 😉

My lawyer is excellent. In Canada, support animals are a grey area. My doctor wrote an official letter certifying them as my support animals. He was very specific too.

I am moving to the new place. The issue now is to make sure that I can ALWAYS have fancy rats as emotional support animals. My lawyer is going to look over the lease agreement and anything else I have to sign to make sure that what they are offering me is not just 'have the rats until they die and you can't have any more.' I want to make sure they always allow me to have my type of support animals for as long as I am able to care for them.

One of my rats, Big Schpog, is getting up there. She'll be 2 in July. The other two I have are youngsters, not even a year old. I want to make sure that when a rat passes, I can replace with another baby. It sounds to me like these people don't understand Fancy Rats and how you can't just have one.

So just a quick update:

The company at first told me they would move me to this nice place but wouldn't take the rats. Then the next day, they changed their minds. It's been complete chaos here with the tenant that assaulted me. She is so loud and obnoxious in the hallway that I just can't wait to move out. I'm moving some time within the month. My doctor wrote an excellent ESA note.

I know that in the USA, once a doc writes you and ESA note, you're good to go as in the USA the laws around support animals are firm. In Canada, that is not the case. They can still reject you even with this crucial letter. However, the Vancouver City Council has started legislation to make it illegal for housing to reject you if you have animals and it passed it's first round of voting. Apparently, the biggest reason for surrendering of animals to the SPCA is that housing won't accept them. I don't know if rats will be covered but you can bet that I'll have a hand in helping that along. If you can have a puppy that chews, a cat that scent marks the walls, then you should be able to have Fancy rats, that do none of those things.

It's been quite the uphill battle for us but we are, I think, finally in the home stretch. I just hope there's no more surprises.

The local Rat club is now doing a search to make sure my neighbour M's rats truly ended up at the SPCA and not as snake food. I know for a fact they didn't end up at the local rat rescue. I don't trust the manager here to do anything right and she hates rats.

I hope they made it to a safe place and are being treated by a vet for their various issues.

I would've loved to have had Big Schpog's brothers and sister but it would be too much for me. I know the local rat rescue and rat club will do everything to try and find them.

They were gorgeous rats. The boys looked just like their sister Big Schpog, very expressive Agouti faces.
