Hi,
I got 2, 8 week old rats 2 days ago and ever since we got into the car to being them home, the little dumbo one has been sneezing alot! I read it can just be because of different homes theyre in but it had been 24 hours and i felt so bad for him! so i took him to the vets and he said there was red ish stuff coming out of his nose (he told me the name i just cant remember it) he took him temperature and listened to his heart and said both were fine. He has prescribed him antibiotics and anti-inflammatory which i am giving him once a day. Hes been on them for 24 hours now and doesnt seem to be getting better. When out of the cage he is fine and will run around he is just abit shy and scared still, which doctor also said his sneezing could be due to stress. First few days he was fine and running about his cage but last 24 hours hes been hidden alot not sure if hes abit scared still due to going to vets and that. Does anyone have any advice for me please??

Hi, I am not an expert or a vet but to me it sounds like a respiratory problem, so it's good that he's on antibiotics. These respiratory problems take quite long to get better. Also, what kind of bedding are you using? Make sure it is dust free, for dust can enhance the problems. Also make sure he is really getting all the medicine in, rats are really smart and mine sometimes smear their faces on blankets to get the "nasty" medicine out of their mouths. You can hide the medicine in some food (baby food usually works nicely, as long as it does not have any onion in it!). I hope you little one improves fast. I would also advise to keep weighing him every two days, maybe even every day to make sure he is gaining weight and eating well :)

Yes all the bedding has been dust free from the start. Im litterally having to force it down his throat now as he will not take it and turns his head at it, little bugger. He does seem better now and sneezing less. He is eating anything i give his fruit and veg wise and hes still eating his nuggets and drinking water only abit though. When hes not asleep he is running around with the other baby rat I have so hea definitly not lethargic. Hopefully i gave him the antibiotics soon enough!

Hey, I was just wondering how your baby is doing? That he was eating is a very good sign! I usually try giving the antibiotics in something they love, like babyfood (no onions), yoghurt or even malt paste if they are being really difficult. I also tried giving medicine sprinkled on some rice which usually works quite well as well.
