Hi I have a rescued rat that I have had for about 6 months now and he has a bad URI. He lost over 100 grams in weight and looks very sick and has lost weight. His brother was also like this and looked like he was about to die but made a full recovery. My current sick rat is so skinny and won’t eat and is on strong antibiotics(vet prescribed) and will be on them for 3 weeks. I keep having this issue and wonder if it’s because I’m doing something wrong. I’m using bath mats in the cage and spot cleaning every day. Is there something better that will help with the URIs. Everyone has recommended bath mats to me but they don’t seem to work. I’m in need of some help!!! The picture is of my sick boy.

its possibly genetic and nothing to do with you. The brothers may have weaker immune systems and aren't able to fight off those infections.
How old is your lad?
What antibiotics were you given for him? How long has he been on them?

I'm sorry for this little guy. Some rats have severe mycoplasmosis and have to be on pulse AB's for the rest of their lives. What was the diagnosis from the vet? How old is he? How many times has he been on antibiotics since you've had him?

One of the things I do for my girls when they are congested is give them some tea/caffeine. It opens up their bronchial tubes and helps them clear congestion. I know some people will not agree with my strategy. Some give high grade chocolate to help open the bronchia. Your little guy has to start gaining weight and so he must have some high calorie Ensure or other high calorie foods. Eggs, etc.

I have medicine from the vet to help him gain weight. He won’t eat enough though. He’s about a year and a half I’ve had him for about 5 months now. He’s been on antibiotics once. He won’t really eat and some times he has good days and sometimes he doesn’t. I don’t know what to do he’s not getting better overall 😭

He has been on them for about a week now, however about a month ago he was on antibiotics because he was sick and it came back. He’s a year and a half I’ve had him for about 5 months now. Most days he just lays with me and has issues breathing. I don’t know how to help him and it breaks my heart

What are you feeding him?

What are you feeding him?
The vet prescribed this supplement you mix with water to syringe feed him. I try to give him as much baby food and soft foods as he’ll eat in one day but I need to start syringe feeding because he’s refusing to eat. I don’t know what to do he usually loves food I’m really worried about him. I also don’t want him to suffer or starve

Lets start with your antibiotic treatment and go from there. If it was the wrong antibiotic, not given long enough (7-10 days is too short) or was not given enough of to effect a cure then it wouldn't work.

Once we determine that the antibiotics treatment should've worked then we look at different issues like heart related which is an entirely different treatment.

What antibiotics did they give you?
How much did he weigh?
What concentration (mg/ml or %) were the antibiotics (check bottle or vet bill)
what dose did you give him and how often per day?

Unfortunately he passed away last night. I took him to the vet anytime he had an issue, the first round of antibiotics seemed to work but it came back a week later and I took him and got him on meds. I’m praying that I did everything I could have for him and I’m glad he’s not suffering anymore, thank you for your help.

I'm going to edit your title to add "Post Closed" but people can still add their condolences. I just don't want someone posting advice not realizing it's not needed anymore. Take care of yourself.
