I endorse what others said: if you're concerned, buy Baytril/enrofloxacin yourself, and put him on it for two weeks. Post back if you need help with dosages. (To me, he looks pretty healthy and I can't hear any breathing sounds in your video.) I understand the rationale for taking your pet to a vet rather than doing it yourself, but so many vets really don't know anything about rats (even the good ones) .
Many rats will make URI breathing noises off and on. I have rats that will be perfectly silent and seem healthy, and then one morning a guy will suddenly sound terrible! He will sound as if he has an untreated URI which has been left without antibiotics his entire life! Then next morning? ..... Totally silent again! So weird, yet so typical of rats trying to hide their illnesses. They are masters at deceptive health practices but even THEY can't always hide it and a major flare-up can be too much to hide. This is why I do weekly check-ups to all of my rescues, permanently re-homed rats. I just gently encourage (or force) them to run and be active for a minute so that any hidden breathing issues will be uncovered when I do the rattie megaphone tactic.

Oh, BTW, ratdad said it perfectly, unless you pull a rat off a antibiotic within a few days for being ineffective, you MUST treat for 2 weeks minimum, and then, if treatment in effective, for 2 weeks AFTER symptoms are gone. And finding a TRUE rat vet is hit or miss unless you have a wonderful, well-known and respected exotics vet near you. And EVEN THEN, you should always do your own thing, researching and observation of you sick rat, documenting daily, so that you have this info for when your rattie sees his vet. Hope this helps

The baytril just arrived! Can anybody here help me with the dosages? I have a small scale I can use if I need to weigh Whiskers, and the baytril came with a syringe. I think I will be mixing it with yogurt or applesauce and spoon feeding it though.

Okay, when I get his weight I'll post again. I don't have any syrup other than maple syrup and honey (syrup?) but I'm worried those too high in sugar. And yes, I got the 10% Enrofloxacin liquid- I got it from ladygouldianfinch.com.

Don't worry about sugar, it's not important. Getting antibiotics into your rat while covering the bitter taste of the antibiotics is much more important. I use Smuckers caramel sundae syrup to mix with mine.

533 grams is a nice normal boy size :)

Ok so his dose would be 0.08 (undiluted and given in a small amount of food)

Or you can mix 1 ml of Enro with 3 ml of syrup in a small bottle, shaken well, and then his dose would be 0.32 ml. This can be given in food or syringed into his mouth.
keep the mixed Enro in the fridge.

Thanks! How many times should I give him the meds each day? Also, I plan on just measuring and mixing the enro each time- would I still have to keep the enro in the fridge?

You need to give the Enro twice a day, as close to 12 hours apart as possible.

the instructions i gave you will give you 4 ml of fluid and he would only need a little twice a day. That amount should last you 4-5 days. I'm not sure how you can mix it each time without a lot of wastage.

Okay. So after mixing 1 ml of enro and 3 ml of fluid, I would give him 0.32 ml twice a day? Or .16 ml twice a day? (Sorry, this is my first time with meds and I want to get it right lol)

Just make sure you are mixing it well. Honey is so thick I could imagine a scenario where it does not get completely homogenized.

I like strawberry ensure for a medication base. It is thick- but thin enough to stir or shake- and its flavor masks medications well.

Today I looked in the rat cage and I saw splotches of light red stuff on the tissues in one of the rats' hammocks! (quite a lot) I'm not sure what it is, and who it came from, but I looked at them for a while, and couldn't see anything unusual. I thought it might be porphyrin and I really hope it's not blood, but does anyone know what it might be?

I just took them out to free roam and when I listened to my other rat's sides, I heard a sound too :( Should I start treating him? Could the red stuff possibly have come from him?
