Please help, what could be causing this? There's what seems like mucus blocking her nose and throat and it won't stop forming. It happened out of nowhere. She was fine just a few minutes ago. I have antibiotics at home if needed. Would nebulising help? Is there a way I can clean her nose to help her breath better? I can only see my exotics vet in the morning.

If she's at that point she needs to go see a vet right away is there no way you can contact an emergency vet? They can put her on oxygen, try meds asap see if she will take them. Nebulising her at this point might stress her and cause her to panic. I really hope she pulls through and you can get her the help she needs, stay strong 😊

Oh poor lass, was she normal before this? Gasping like this is a bad sign, I hope your vet can help you today :(
Yes she had just been playing in the room a couple minutes before this happened. My exotics vet is long train ride away and I didn't think she could take it so I took her to a nearby vet, they are not specialized in exotics but tried their best, she is on oxygen and antibiotics. They think she inspirated something while eating and its logged in the lung creating infection. Sorry for my english, I hope this was clear.

Is she still gasping?
She stopped gasping like in the video in the middle of the night. She was mostly breathing through her nose when I dropped her. I feel like maybe sometimes she would do a little gasp but I'm not sure. I slept thinking she was feeling better and that maybe she was just choking before but in the morning she was very puffy and cold and was breathing abdominally ( not sure if that's the correct term ) that's when I rushed her in. She's staying there for a while, I asked them to put her on oxygen. They gave her Baytril and I'm going to go get her in a couple of hours.

I'm guessing this means, if the vets are right that something is logged in her lungs, that she will develop pneumonia or has already? Im going to bring it up to the vet to get her on Baytril + Zithro, I read that's a good combo to help with that. I was also wondering, I have a nebuliser, are there any antibiotics or anything I can use to nebulise with that may help her?

you would have to ask your vet what they would prescribe. There's bronchodilators like albuterol, etc and even hypertonic saline (isotonic is regular, hyper has more saline and has been used in COPD patients)

I love baytril and zithro for difficult respiratory infections.

Just brought her home. Noticed that any type of movement makes her hyperventilate so I won't be using the nebuliser at least for now cuz I feel like it would make her panic. Vet sais she needs to be as still as possible. Vet gave her a steroid and I'll be giving her Baytril and Zithro. Really hope she recovers. Thank you for replying.

if there's any internal swelling or inflammation the injection of dexamethasone should really help. Fingers crossed for your lass!

Just noticed she will start mouth breathing at times. Not necessarily gasping. She breathes through her nose for a while and then through her mouth for a bit. Is there a way I can help her become less congested ? I tried a bit of chocolate earlier this morning, maybe I'll try a little bit later but that's the only thing I can think of. I'm terrified of trying to feed her or give her water because sometimes out of nowhere she will gasp. And I'm afraid she will aspirate something. Also, i wanted to ask if Zithro can be given twice a day? Or if it's just once? I've always did just once but I came across someone saying it could be given twice and I'm wondering if it would be more effective.
The vet said to keep the room colder rather than warmer but I've been reading through some pneumonia related threads here and people say to keep the room warm... which one is best? Thank you for your time !!

ok true pneumonia has fluid built up in the lungs...is there any chance that her nose is stuffed up and maybe there's gunk covering it making her breathe through her nose? If so, rats naturally breathe through their nose and being forced to breathe through their mouth can make some panic. Does she sneeze at all?

Vet did an x-ray the day this all started and saw a strange object on the lung which we came to the conclusion was something she aspirated and they said there was maybe *some* fluid but they weren't sure. At least there wasn't enough that they felt laxis was needed. She does sneeze sometimes. When this all started there was gunk blocking her nose and it was also coming through her throat/ mouth, she would sometimes spit it. That isn't happening anymore. Her nose doesn't seem too stuffed now, she doesn't sound congested. What she does is she breaths through her nose for a long while but then sometimes gasps. Like she wasn't getting enough oxygen from breathing through her nose. Once she gasps she then breathes through her mouth for a minute or so and is back to breathing through her nose. I've been giving her a piece of chocolate when this happens and starts becoming more severe and it has helped. So maybe it is congestion?
Thank you.
